Auto Trans Question

I purchased a '93 truck w/ auto transmission recently. At what temperature will the aux. trans cooler fan run that is located under bed(in front of right driver rear tire)?

I drove in 90 degree heat(empty, no towing) and the thing never ran, or at least I never heard it. Previous owner said when it ran it would also run when truck was turned off for a while. So, someone tell me about the operating characteristics.

My fan comes on between 175-180 degf on my gauge.



It seem to take alot to get the fan to run,alot of stop and go while towing, long up hill climbs, if your engine coolant temp gets mutch over 180 and high abient temps 95-100 trans temps will gwt high enough to bring fan on.



The fan will continue to run when the truck is shut down if temp is over 180. i'll let the truck idle in neutral until the fan shuts down

so the trans fluid keeps circulating.

I've noticed a number of posts here and there mentioning a transmission cooler mounted down under, aft of the cab--is that a factory thing, and if so, when did it begin?



The only reason I ask is that I don't see anything like that on my '92. I just seem to have a cooler mounted by the radiator.

My '93 has an auxillary cooler under the bed on the driver's side in addition to the one up by the radiator. The owner's manual states that it is a factory option, but it had to be installed by the dealer at delivery. It was probably an option for those who tow or have the snow plow prep. option (I have the tow pkg). I don't know what years it was offered. I didn't know it had a fan... I don't think I have heard it. I have never seen my trans temp gauge go over 150 degrees. In fact, I drove from Colorado to Maine and back 2 weeks ago and my trans temps stayed lower on the trip (in 100 deg heat in KS and MO) than just driving around town for 30 minutes.

My temp gauge is in my return line coming from the front coolers back to the trans, thats where they split off to go to the under bed cooler.



The cooler was an option in 93, along with 3:53 gears raised the tow rating up to 8500#

Thanks RickD Have been thinking about replacing the rubber trans. hose to the aux. under bed cooler on my 93. Thought i'd put a temp gauge in at the same time in a section of the rubber hose. Maybe not a good location. Bob
