Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Thread size ???

So I have almost 82k miles on my '01. I am figuring it is time for some trans work. I have kept up with the regular maintenance, and was just looking for input from any of you TDR members out there as to what I might want to look at. Should I be looking at a new valve body, or would I benefit from doing a TC as well? I have my gauges in, and I might be adding an EZ or comp down the road.

TIA,

Dane

Oo. Bill K. or Stefan are the guys to talk to... DTT is THE way to go IMO. I had over 80k on my transmission, running Amsoil, and it was still COOKED. I had a BD TC/Pressureloc/VB, and from the moment I got my DTT trans/TC (91), there was a dramatic difference. It now runs, pulls, shifts and drives they way I expected from the factory. Give them a call (http://www.dieseltrans.com ), you won't be disappointed.

Now you did it, you started a transmission thread! Watch this one later on as it will get hot, don't ask my preference it's in the Sig!

913... just in case you didn't already know, and as Jim points out... the pin has been pulled from the grenade... all you can do now is RUN! transmission threads tend to get "interesting"... let's hope this stays toward the positive, and you get information that helps you make a decision, regardless of what brand you go with. You will probably find that across the board one thing everyone agrees on is the 47RE in a stock configuration leaves much to be desired in performance and reliability. Good luck!:-{}

Do your homework and call the Transmission Vendors. Talk to them and go with the folks you feel most comfortable with. For me that was ATS in Denver. They are family owned and operated, and their engineering expertise is simply the BEST. Clint has done (and continues to do) the Most Thorough job of engineering of all the Transmission Builders.

With ATS you can get just the TripleLok TC and Valve Body if your trans is relatively low mileage, however with 82,000 you're approaching the borderline.

Here is a Thread I posted when I got back from ATS 2 years ago.

If you get to the right coast, you can drive mine.

Anything is better than the stock trans the way it left the factory.

IMO DTT was the most helpful and complete kit, they are great and i love mine, like said before you are borderline, with mild mods that you are considering i wouldnt think you would need a billet output, but i would do at least a TC and VB and for me it was an easy choice to just go ahead and do the update kit and the servro and accum while it was out. i love not having to wory about it.

Without having a qualified trans shop tear down your transmission you'll never know the real condition of your clutches. If you tow any they are probably due for replacement anyway. You cannot go wrong with most of the major companies that advertise in the TDR. There are some people who are happy with what they are using and they are freakin RABID about it. Find a shop in your area that will install or does installes for the company you decide so that if you have any problems or just need adjustments they are close by. :D

By changing over to a DTT, Goerand or ATS transmission, is there actually that much difference in the power? I mean, all else being the same, is it really like driving a different truck with a lot more power?

24V,

You get to experience the real effect of your bombs. My trans was already slipping, I knew it, andwas nursing it. After the replacement I thought I was in another truck.

I know I was asking for trouble starting a trans thread! Its okay though. I was looking for first hand experiences by those who have gone before me. My trans is starting to slip, when I get on the go pedal, it doesn't like to shift out of 1st, sometimes. I will have to let off and then back on otherwise I redline. So I may go all out and do a TC and valve body at the same time. I was just wondering what some of the other mods give you over stock.

Thanks,

Dane

transmission rebuild = New truck feeling

I would go with one of the major rebuilders AND the one where YOU are most comfortable.

See sig where I went

I am considering DTT and billet options.

In a towing environment what is the life after the build? Nothing harsh with the towing, just wondering how long before another look inside the case?

Thanks!

913, go see Diesel Dynamics there in Vegas. Power goodies and DTT installls in one spot. :)

crazygator, did DTT for another member, EB, pulled 40' gooseneck loaded with oil field equipment for about 100K then sold the truck, no problems.

I asked the same question as well as what would the return to DTT freshen up maintenance schedule be after rebuild.

Basically DTT said to maintain the 12k pan drop and change fluid and filter change and band adjustment.

I asked them when they needed to see it next 50k, 100k, 250k, 500k? and they said when I noticed slippage whick may never happen. Also depends on how you drive your truck I would think. I GandPa mine and only tow with O/D out about 63 mph.

I had a billet everything and total rebuild done. I tow a 5er (13k) and may never need to open it except for the 12k as discussed above.

Hope this helps,

Bob Weis
