hi guys ,

i have a 97 2500 4x4 deisels auto with a no 6 plate . i went to the country with a couple of quad bikes on the back and at about 60 mph up hills if i pushed the go pedal too hard the trans would make a bad type of shudder ,so i eased up and the shudder would not occur , the trans temp was not high . it has been hard to get it to do it again un loaded but ,with the overdrive off it sometimes does it at lower speeds if you push it to hard . could this be i need a new torque converter or a full trans rebuild , the truck has done 60000miles .

once again your assistance would be appreciated

regards conn

Well, it certainly sounds like the TC is slipping. That would cause the shudder you describe when under load and heavy pedal. Mine was slipping at 107,000+ miles and I got the ATS rebuild. Their TC won't slip. I certainly would NEVER put a stock TC back into your truck. With your #6 plate and the load you describe it would only be a matter of time until you toasted another TC.

With 60,000 miles on your truck, you would be far ahead to just go ahead and get an aftermarket Torque Converter and Valve Body. Those two would prolong the life of your trans a lot. You probably don't need a complete rebuild, but if you continue to slip your present TC, you will eventually burn it, and send little bits of TC Clutch material all through the trans, which will kill the trans. Then it WILL need a rebuild.

If you have to drive it awhile without getting a better TC & VB, then don't give it heavy pedal at low RPM's, and don't give it heavy pedal when under any kind of load. Basically, you don't want to make it shudder ever again!

Here is a Thread I posted when I returned from ATS last year after getting my trans completely rebuilt. Clint has shipped parts out of the country before, and I'm sure he'd have no problem shipping to Australia

I was having similar problems with mine, along with what felt like to soft of shifts (Stock plate/position). While I was adjusting my idle, I saw that the TV cable that runs from thr throttle linkage to the transmission was disconnected. Part of the ear had broken off on the bottom edge.

It will stay there as long as there was pressure holding it. Put a small dab of rtv silicone on it so it would hold long enough til I got a chance to pick a new one up.

It has made a huge difference in the way it works.

May need to clean or adjust your TPS also.
