We have a '99 with an auto here on the ranch that when in either D or OD (won't do it in 1 or 2) and between 1500 and 2000 rpm's it feels like it wants to upshift or surge (don't quite know how to describe it). The tach will bouce from say 1900 down to 1600 and keep doing it if you don't change how much fuel you give it. I took it to our local mech. and he plugged in his scanner and we took a ride. Well, with his scanner plugged in it wouldn't do it and when he unplugged it it went right back to doing it

I was hoping someone here might have an idea of what it might be or some thing to try.

TIA, Kris

In case it may be relavent when in OD it does it while your are going between 55 and 60 mph. Sorry I didn't check to see what the mph were when in D.

Kris, Had my 98. 5 do the same thing a it was a Crank Position Sensor, They are about $50 from Northwest Cummins, It's behind the starter and while you're at it you might think about what I did I changed the starter contacts at the same time to "larry B's" super contacts about $35 bucks. The three 10mm bolts were a bear to remove from the starter though. I replaced mine with Socket head Allen bolts. You might also check the contacts on the alternator they sometimes cause these problems and make sure you clean the battery cables. Just some thoughts.

Mine did the same thing. I had to reset the APPS

Disconnect batteries for at least 30 minutes, then reconnect batteries, then key to on position do not attempt to start, then push peddle down slowly to floor then back up slowly, do this three times, then turn key off, then turn back on and start your engine.

Hey it's does not cost anything to try this. Hope it helps.

Thanks guys I will try reseting the APPS next time the guy that drives it comes here to headquarters. If that doesn't work I will try the Crank Position Sensor.

Thanks again, we didn't have a clue were to start.

Hmmm 99 auto ... Surging ... thats new  Just Kidding. It sounds like that good ol Converter locking / unlocking gag strikes again.

<hr>

Erratic torque converter clutch (TCC) operation.

This information applies to vehicles equipped with a 5. 9L 24-valve diesel engine and automatic transmission built between January 1, 1998 and December 18, 1998. Some vehicles may exhibit a surge-like condition while in fourth gear. This may be caused by the TTC unlocking and locking when it should be consistently locked. The cause of this erratic operation has been identified as electrical noise from the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) or Alternator. This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software (calibration changes 98cal12 and 99cal14).

Check your build date and even if it is after the above TSB You still may fall under the erratic TC engagement FIX from signal noise found within the apps wiring harness (Has plagued even a few 01 trucks too) . (99 Auto trans thread fix = This)

My '99 had this problem. Myself and several others have gotten relief by cleaning the batter cables. Take them off, clean the post and the terminal. On the driver's side, take the other wires off. Clean everything very well. Put it all back together, make sure that it is tight. You should have the cables off long enough to reset the APPS. Get in, turn the key on and slowly depress and release the accellerator to recalibrate the Apps.

This worked well for me. Only problem was that after a few cleanings, because I didn't have battery spray, I could no longer tighten the cables. In that case, take the bolts out and run a hacksaw blede through the gap at the end to get more room to tighten.

my truck has 325000kms. never had any driveability problems, until yesterday . engine surge mostly increase rpm. checked fuel pressures with seperate aircraft fuel gauge to verify my westach . all ok. decided to clean battery cables, found left battery cable end at battery cracked so it was loose even though bolt was tight, crack was hard to see until cable was off. new soldered end installed no more problem. keep a eye on those ends . hope this helps someone.

Thanks for the info guys. I haven't had a chance to try any of the suggestions yet as I'm not the one that drives it but will next time I see him. Thanks.

Well we cleaned the battery terminals and posts and reset the APPS, that took care of it. Glad it was that easy.

Thanks for all the help,Kris
