Who's Had "Idle-Up" Enabled on their Manual Trans '05?

Hey Guys, I have been looking all over the site to try and determine what might be wrong with my truck. I have a 2003 that had the transmission upgraded very thoroughly about 30k miles ago. I jumped in it today and while heading down a hill I noticed that it seemed to be having some power issue even though I was not giving it any fuel. I then pulled into a parking lot and could smell a burnt oil smell, I pulled the transmission dipstick and the oil smelled burned. (I just replaced the oil maybe two hundred miles ago). I decided to go back home, when I put the truck in reverse, I got no movement. I still had the forward gears so I put it into reverse again and after a moment or two it started to inch backward, I backed up enough to get out going forward and took it straight home. Do you guys have any idea what this might be? Or where a good reputable trans shop in Utah would be? Thanks... .

Not sure this is any help or even your problem but...

When I got my trans done and it was finished Bill was telling me do's and donts, quirks etc. One thing he mentioned was make sure the selector is really in drive and not just close. He said reverse would burn out quickly if it wasnt as they use the same something or other and it was possible to have the reverse clutches going while you were driving forward thereby trashing the reverse clutches. It has been quite a while since he told me this so I may very well be wrong about exactly what is happening but I definitely remember him telling me make sure it is D not close as it would/could trash reverse.

You mentioned that you changed the fluid about two hundred miles ago. Did you adjust the rear band at the same time? Was there any material in the bottom of the pan? Do you use manual 1st (putting the selector in 1)?

As someone else has asked, what mods have been done to the trans?

The upgrades done were done while someone else owned the truck, I believe it was a new torque converter, valve body, mag hytec double deep pan, and maybe some other things, I believe it cost the last owner about 5K to do it all. I did change the fluid about two hundred miles ago, I did not adjust the rear band, and there was some material in the pan, not tons of it, I don't think it would have been even a teaspoonful but probably close. I have used manual 1st once or twice not to slow down, but because I thought it would help when starting out on a hill with a load. (Maybe about a 4000 pound trailer. ) Other than that, I have not used that gear.

A teaspoonful is actually quiet a bit. If it was non-metal, and the fluid is really burnt smelling, I would guess that the rear band is toast. Best bet is to take it to a trans shop...

No reverse is a problem with the rear band, this also affects first gear if I rember right, so I think it wants to take off in second gear?

I don't think the rear band can be replaced without removing the transmission, so check with the transmission builder and see if there is a warrenty coverage to have it replaced.

The rear band (plus the sprag clutch) is used in first if it is manually placed there. It uses the sprag clutch only when in drive for first gear.

Thank you for your responses and information, I have talked with others who confirm what you are suggesting. The rear band is likely gone and the transmission will have to be pulled to fix it. My next cringe is what the cost might be if the warranty is no longer valid. I think it still might be, I have to look into it further. I have always been a manual transmission guy, this is my first automatic ever so I hope to still make it a positive experience over the long run... Are you guys thinking of a ball park number on a repair such as this?
