Just bought this 2001 2500 cummins. Love it so far but today, out of the blue, noticed it would not shift out of 1st gear until above 2500 rpm and stayed in that gear way too long.

That is what happens when it is cold.

Once warmed up, If in D (drive) it won't start in first gear at all, but starts out in second gear. I can force it to 1st by moving selector down to 1st as soon as I start driving.

It's like the valve body doesn't work when in Drive.

has 64,000 miles. has bed ball for goose neck, so probably has done it's share of towing in the past.

Did notice some trans fluid leaking under hamonic balancer where the steel lines connect to the rubber lines that go to the cooler. Presure leak maybe?

Cannot tell if 30k miles and 60k miles trans service has ever been done. Will not having any prior evidence of work harm my chances getting this repaired under waranty?

Have a friend help you check the kick-down cable for free and easy travel. Disconnect it at the trans and let the friend push the throttle to the floor while you watch it move. It won't come back out till you pull it. Does it move easy? It should.

If this is ok, then I would drop the pan, replace the pressure transducer and silnoid and of coarse the fluid.

I was just at the parts store this same morning to gather parts to service transmission. I don't think it ever has been. Only had the truck a couple of weeks.
