Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) auto trans ???

A friend of mine has a 01 or 02 3/4 4x4 with the auto. He is wanting to do a little modifying to the motor. Very mild stuff, his mommy and daddy bought the truck and dont want him to break anything. LOL. I was wondering how well his trans will hold up to say a fleetgaurd air filter and maybe a chip of some sort. I have heard there is a module or something for the trans that will make it bullet proof. You'll have to excuse my lack of knowledge, for I have a 98 12 valve with a 5 spd.
