Well folks this is what I get for bragging on my truck this weekend.
I had just completed a 1650 mile trip from Lafayette, LA to South Padre Island, TX and points in between, when less than 20 miles from home my transmission went out on me.
I was speaking to my dad and was bragging that the truck has given me 54k faithful trouble free miles. Here are the specifics.
On interstate 10 at mile maker 87 (Rayne, LA) there was a mult-mile construction traffic jam. Hence numerous stop and go 5 mph runs. It was during one of the short runs that I felt first gear start to take a long time to shift. Thought it was odd, but nothing more. Eventually we got clear of the construction about Mile Marker 97 and I was able to get back up to interstate speed. I set the cruise control at 72 and noticed that the Tach was spinning up from a constant 1850 rpm to as high as 2500 rpm. Well needless to say the warning bells went off in my head, but the truck was still pulling under its own power and I was only 8 or so miles from home. So I limped her to the drive way.
When I get home I crawl under the truck and am greeted by a COATED underbelly full of automatic transmission fluid. Under closer examination I notice that a bolt head securing the transmission to the “bell housing” (I assume that is what you call where the torque converter is housed) has sheered off. Causing a separation and failure of the seal.
I have attached a photo of my predicament, and am curious if any one else has seen this same problem.
I have called DC and they offer a possible Co-Pay on the repair depending on what a dealer service manager recommends. I am having it towed to Acadiana Dodge in Lafayette, LA as I write this and am anxiously awaiting the report.
I should know by now to never brag on a truck.
Cheers,
WD
