Anybody out there real sharp on identifying 518 transmissions by pan rail number?

If so, what year is this one: PK53007779 0870 8837

Simplysmn: Yes and no. I am just trying to determine the exact year. My brother and I have chased it in the parts manual we have and it shows to be a 91/92. It was advertised as a 93. I was hoping it was, as the 93 has the helical cut planetary gears in the OD unit. But, oh well, it is at least an actual brand new, never been in a unit and never had fluid in it trans. Still has the factory plastic plugs and and caps in place. Thanks for your input. By the way, the place we got it has more of them, if you know of anyone looking for a 518.

ok to make it easier just send me a e mail with info

-- email address removed -- that better :)

Simplysmn: Figured out "PM". Sent you one. Other people on TDR may be interested also, so will give same info to all who ask. I think it is a great deal.

The transmission is not specific to year is the problem. A trans could have been built in late 91 and pulled from stock for a 93 build, it just depends on how their inventory and use was running at the time. Never had any luck trying to get the exact config of a trans via part #, it is just never that exact.

AFAIK, the helical planetaries were not used until the 618 was built, and it was built starting in 93. There are stories of late 93's with a factory 618 in them floating around but hard to verify.

The FSM and parts manual is good to a point on most things but it has deficiencies in some areas especially around small changes. What it says may or may not be true.

cerberusiam: Thanks for the comeback. John (Jack) and I have seen what you mean about the FSM parts manual. It does say in there, that (by pan rail number) that the

93's have the helical gears. I would like to come accross one and take it apart to see. We both understand the warehousing/pick issue you mention. Having grown up in the Detroit area and the auto industry, you are definitely correct.

I have a 93 truck. Someday I am gonna do something with the trans so will have to pull the OD apart and check it. Have a 92 518 as a project trans also so can compare if I get really ambitious. :)

We have a '93 Dakota with the 5. 2L and an A518. It now has pushing nearly 200K on it, the transmission has never needed anything other than fluid changes and filters. Very good transmission. Minimal towing with that rig. Still going strong, other than the peeling paint nightmare, thank you Dodge.

JLeake: Yeah know what you mean about the paint. Chrysler/Dodge build great vehicles, they just can't make the paint stick. Never have figured that out. Heard a lot of thoughts on it, but no proof. My first Chrysler product was a 57 Desoto. Had great paint and was still good when I got rid of it, so their paint problems came after that. If youv'e looked at my signature, you see we have all high mileage Chrysler/Dodge products. I haven't added the one missfit. It is a 95 Mazda Protege with 302,000 miles and getting 36 mpg. My son-in-law drives it to work unless the weather is nice and he is riding his 2010 Harley.

cerberusiam: For me, that would take a lot of ambition, but then, I don't have a shop. I work off my tailgate in the driveway. However, it would definitely be interesting just to see. Do you have a 93 service manual? If you do, you can look up the pan rail number of the one that is "supposed" to have the helical gears and see, if by chance yours is the right number.

Jim,
Where did you find the info in the Factory Service Manual? Neither my paper manual or the CD version I have shows that info. I had to look in the Parts Book.
John

Ooops! Dumb brother slipped up again. I meant the Factory Parts Manual we have on disc. Not the Factory Service Manual. Sorry guys & gals & brother. In the parts manual on disc, it is shown on page #1038. Item/part # 5. It shows that the 93's have a 5 pinion helical gear planetary.

I have an FSM, somewhere. Let me see if I can find the number and send it to you for cross reference.

John checked it out in an FSM he has and that is why he was questioning me saying I found it in an FSM. I screwed up and wrote FSM instead of Parts Manual. From what he commented, he couldn't find it in the FSM. By the way, I finally got my rear axle changed out and now am hoping to make the Iowa meet.
