Can anyone tell me if the new HD 48RE can be fitted in my 1999 3500 truck??? I do not know if the bolt up or the shafts are compatible. . Thanks... :)

Just use a DTT or Ats or one of the many out there. With the electronics I bet in the long run and the choices you can make(built to specs)it would be far easier to deal with then a retro 48re. Just my 02 worth.

Don't know for sure, but my guess is that it will fit right in. Parts shows the case (PN 52118758AB) is the same for 47RE and 48RE. The problem you might run into is the PCM may not allow all the features that the 48 has that are not in your 46 or 47RE. Actually, the guts from a 48 should fit right in a 47 if you wanted the heavy duty parts.

A new 48RE retails for $3260. 00, but I bet you could find a parts dept to sell you one for under $3000. 00 if that is the way you wanted to go. That does not include the overdrive unit.

I'm not an auto transmission guru, by any means, but... . the reason the cases are the same is that they are substantially the same transmission. I would have to agree with DPKetchum. the 48RE has some upgrades for sure, but I would imagine you would be way farther ahead to spend the $'s upgrading your 47RE rather than doing a transmission swap. Lots of guys are running HUGE power through thier 47's with thoughtful modifications.

Sorry, I guess I didn't really answer your question. I think the right answer is: Yes. But hopefully someone can tell you for sure.

trany change

I saw this post and it reminded me of something I was thinking about today. I was wondering if I could put an Allison in my 03 in place of the 48RE?? In thinking about I thought, the diesel pusher motorhomes run an Allison behind the 5. 9 engine, and so do some medium duty trucks! To me dodge would be the perfect pickup, well it is anyway, but it would be the most perfect!

The Allison is in some school buses with the B59 too. I saw them at the Fleetliner dealer being surfaced and talked to a couple techs on break about that. They wern't sure about SIZE and the Electronics as those trans were controled by a box etc.

I used to work in a quick lube and a guy that came in all the time w/ his 96 (I think) cummins said he had an allison behind it. He mentioned it because I had asked him to put it in neutral so I could check the transmission and said he didn't need to do that because it was an allison.

My father used to know the man and said he was an equipment operator for many years, and I know he used his truck to transport 5th wheels for the local trailer dealer also.

Just some food for thought now that someone mentioned it.

You might give ATS a call. They rebuild Allisons, and always have a few lying around. They had at least 2 there when I stopped by in Sept. If you want to call them, their number is 800-949-6002

Just curious but wondering why everyone here is talking Allison over a 48RE. Is this the same Allison in the GM pickups? If so, I'm not sure it is a better transmission. Talked to a guy the other day who just blew up his transmission pulling a light load with his 2002 Chev Duramax/Allison combo. I know Allisons have been around a while and have a good rep but I'm not aware of any problems cropping up with the 48RE, yet anyway. If you think about it, the 47RE was a good unit, just not built heavy enough for diesel mods, etc. The basic design was and always has been fine. Seems as though the 48RE or a DTT (for example) rebuilt 47RE would probably be equal or better than the Allison. Anybody know for sure?

a 47re beefed up alittle bit is stronger than the allison... the 48re is good trans, but if you are doing mods get the tc, vlave body and a trans commander, oh yeah dont forget the input/output shafts. P. S. guys if anyone has a blueprint of the input output shafts send it to me i can make them easily.

different Allisons

The Allison trannys in the Freightliners is way different than the one in the Chevys. A long time ago, I saw an article where someone fitted an Allison in a two-wheel drive Dodge Cummins. It was way cool, but it would either be way expensive to have done or way complicated to do yourself.

As to all of the components of the 48RE being stouter than the 47RE, not so. I don't know auto trannys, but a DTT rep at the Lone Star TDR Ralley in Oct pointed out the gear on the front of the transmission (coupler?) has finer teeth on the 48RE than the 47RE. He said it resembles what amounts to the weak link in the Ford auto trannys.

We'll see how these 48REs hold up in the long run.
