AutoBelt Tensioner

My accessory belt after about 29,000 miles is staring to chirp,and I notice the index stop has now move almost up to the tang. It used to be way down at the bottom. At idle the belt is vibrating,and when you throttle-up the belt stops vibrating and smooths out, but the index stop does not move back down. Should I replace the tensioner and belt or is the belt worn down to a point to wear the tensioner cannot make up the tension. No cracks just some light tread showing in some area's. Thought's?

The chirp is a normal characteristic of the Cummins.

WoodChuck, You are right but, I was thinking that chirp noise was a TSB issue for MY03-06. My truck is a 07. The chirp is the belt slipping right. And what did you think about the tensioner index tang moving you toward the index mark now.

Accessory drive belt chirp at shut down.
A chirping sound may be heard coming from the accessory drive belt when the engine is shut down. If a customer indicates that the condition is present, the bulletin directs the technician to install an overrunning clutch pulley on the generator.

Got-it,on the chirpping issue had read the TSB for 03-06 trucks. I was wondering what does the maintence manual mean by the tang mark verus the index and the distance between them. Mind has both marks almost together. Before the distance was about 1/2 inch or more.

They are just marks to indicate if the tensioner has run out of travel to keep the belt tight or if the belt might be incorrectly routed.
I never knew anything about the tangs or marks before you mentioned it. If you want to check travel on the tensioner just put a wrench in the hole and flip the belt off the bottom of the A/C compressor wheel and see where the tensioner ends up.

Just looked at mine closely and I've got about 1/2" from the tang to the end of my travel limit. Maybe you need a new belt?

Who knows will have my dealer look at it tomorrow,Service manager just called me a few minutes ago and will have a tech look at the tensoner. I notice you are a pro at this,any thought's on calling Joe Donnally at TDR to have a demo at the May Madness,after searching through the post's on TDR, I see some people have had a whale of a time trying to put the new belt on.

It is a pain at first but if you know a few tricks it is possible to take one off and put a new one on in maybe 10 min. I've never timed myself but I've had a bit of practice. I was thinking it could be a fun event to do if there was enough interest.

What tricks? I am going to do mine this week. Also ordered the tensioner pulley. What is there to replacing it as well.

Dealership says no worries the index marks are not aligned,they are still alittle ways apart. When aligned come in to have replaced.
