:D :D :D Got up this morning to our first real cold morning (Calif... 18 degrees). I wondered how the beast would start up. She started right up with little crank and was smooth as glass! I set my defroster on Max and went to feed the horses. Pretty soon I heard the ol lady kick up a gear automatically and by the time I had fed , about 10 minutes. She was toasty warm and defrosted... I liked this way better than my 01!!! The auto idle was set at 1,000 RPM... . I assume all of this is normal? Oo.

When I had my TSB done the lead supervisor turned on the Cummins High Idle feature for me. When you turn on the truck turn on cruise control then set and then use the accel/coast buttons to control idle rpm speed. As soon as you put in gear or hit cancel it'll turn off. I live in Sacramento with an 04. 5, it works pretty well. I recall it gets up to something like 1400 rpm.

JNeves,

The steps you outlined only work on automatic equipped trucks. Those of us with 6 speeds are SOL using the cruise control.

Roper,

What you describe is normal. Works very well for me here too. I thought mine didn't work until it sat for 2 days in rather cold temps.

Who should us 6 speed rowers contact to light a fire under DC's rear to motivate them to change the program to use the parking brake as the interlock to allow the high idle to work for us instead of having to go aftermarket for something the truck is already capable of?

I want a high idle and since the computer is capable of it already I'd rather not start splicing stuff into my wiring and cut up part of the trim in the truck to install an aftermarket high idle... I don't buy the whole difference between the auto's and manuals being some sort of special thing on the cruise since it's all electronic. I mean come on the engine idles itself up when necessary, why not let us control how much and when...

I can't answer your question but I agree with you 100%! There must be some kind of electronic control to allow the 6 speed equipped trucks to regulate engine speed for the PTO outputs of the transmission?

You're talking about a feature that existed way before the high idle TSB. At low temps, the idle would kick up automatically, but I have found this to be unreliable and unpredictable. But yes, it's normal. :)

Forgot to add, mine is a 6 speed and I have NOT had any TSB's performed. She just does this normally. After I got out my handy dandy owners manual, there it was. . Explained the whole smuck. I thought maybe they snuk in a Reflash because I have all of a sudden went up 2MPG average and now this !!! I'm not complaining!!

The difference in the '03 trucks is that we don't have the cable and modulators used for the cruise in the auto's. If memory serves me correctly the 04 and up trucks were all electronic. Yes, we with the 03 hand shakers are SOL!

My bullydog downloader has the high idle feature. Juss plug her in and pick the rpms I want. About a 10 second job. truck is a 03 6 speed

I mostly just turn the jake on, seems to work fine too. So there is a solution one way or another for the 03's
