This has probably been discussed before, but I can't find it for the life of me on these forums: What are some good manufacturers of six speed trannys that could be installed on my '97 2WD? What I have in mind is ordering something online from a reputable dealer and having a local mechanic install it for me.

Thanks!

First, Welcome to the TDR!!

An auto to manual changeout is a pretty complicated task. There are a few guys here that have done it successfully tho. . For a transmission, you would want a New Venture 4500 or 5600.

Here are some links that discuss the issue. .

From what I have read about this job you better do your homework and talk to someone that has done this unless you want to be down for a time. This Is the place to learn how to do the job. I have a 95 automatic diesel and been learning about the transmission what It can stand and what to much for It. A fellow got to do his homework.

Wasn't bad on my '95. Don't know about the 'lectronics on the '96 and up though.

I did one on a friends truck, auto to nv4500. It was pretty strait forward, wiring it up was a little tricky but managable. We bought all the parts used from various junk yards, except for the 13" clutch & flywheel ($900) and the clutch slave cylinder (had to go to a dealer for this, $300). transmission was off of e-bay($1000), the pedal assembly was out of a junk yard ($35). We took the p7100 off and had it set to manual specs and turned up 20% by the local bosch fuel injection shop. ($600). The transmission we got came with the bell housing and transfercase... Anyway it took 2 days to do. All in all it wasn't nearly as bad a job as I was led to belive.
