I need help please. I have a 98 12 valver with an automatic transmission. I had the transmission rebuilt at 117000 miles when I overheated it trying to get it unstuck in the mountains. It just went out again after non-towing normal driving, at 180000 miles. I am curious what it would take to get a manual transmission and bolt up.

What is involved to do this?

Who can do it, any shops around?

And, what price are we talking?

If anyone can give me information on this, it would be greatly appreciated. I do not want to have to rebuild the automatic again. Please, Please help.

thats what i have been wanting to know for a long time now. some one out there needs to come up with a conversion kit for these things and mass produce these kits and get rid of the auto

i just did a converted my 96 auto to an 6 speed manual this summer its really not too bad the hardest part is finding the parts i think a 5speed conversion is easier here is a list of parts i needed to change to a 6 speed

wide frame crossmember

flywheel clutch transmission

input shaft on transfer case have to be changed (not too hard but whole t-case does have to come apart just take your time and its not bad)

different pedels with the clutch (94-97 are all the same i think , 98-02 are the same i think the 98-02 bedles can be used but need to be modified) (i put 98 pedels in my 96)

clutch clylinders

need to get the 98 up style 4wd shifter if doing this in 97 or older you need to fillin the exixting hole for the 4wd and cut new holes for the shifters

rewire in the reverse lights switch

the gear slector can just be removed from the steering coulumn

the clutch pedel wireing is already in the dash just pull the jumper and plug in the switch

netural saftey wire form transmission needs to be grounded

and drive shafts are going to need to lengthend and shortened

if you have any questions or what to know where i found the different parts email me

say what?

 I do not understand hardly any of that. What will this cost? And, is there a garage that specializes in something like this or someone whom can do it for me? :--)

enterprise engin will do it for i think around 5000-6000 for 6 speedi think balsleys sometimes has all the parts out of a wrecked turck they sell for around 2000-2500 or a 5speed as far as the work involver its not a whole lot harder than changing a clutch the olny additional work that needs to be done is the 3 holes in the fire wall for the clutch clylinder hole int he floor for the shifter splice two wires rebuild the transfer case which is not very hard and get the drive shafts lengthened and shortend

when i did it

it cost me

2800 transmission clutch and flywheel (peter gould)

25 frame cross member (balsleys)

75 pedels (ebay)

100 clutch clylinders (salvage yard)

75 shifter stub and issolator plate (standard transmission and gear)

25 shift stick (dealer (wholesale price))

shift boot (dealer)

25 98 up style 4wd shift (balsleys)

65 stater spacer&bolts flywheel bolts (cummmins bridgeway)

drive shafts retube front and shorten rear (mine were 500 but i have all new u joints put in and i had the rear completly re made with larger thicker tube and a bigger carrier bering )

I think that Jim Leonard -- email address removed -- or 580 938 3427 does the conversion, and I think that these guys also quad4x4.com 406 446 2427 ask for Dan

There are others also. These are the ones that I know of, regards Jimk
