I'm preparing for a trip out West from NC with a recently purchased 29 ' used 5th wheel. One of my preparations is to install the Mag-Hytec 727-DD transmission pan. My quex. s concern transmission fluid. I went to Advance Auto Supply to check on fluids. Their brand of ATF+4 costs $4/qt. Castrol ATF+4 synthetic cost $5. 25/qt. Mag-Hytec sells LE 7500 Monolec power fluid for $6. 20/qt. (+SH) but Cummins diesel is not one of the brands listed for use. I called my local Dodge dealer and they want $8. 25/qt. Has TDR ever done an article on transmission fluids like was done on motor oils? Is Mopar that much better or is this an example of dealer markup? Any idea why there is so much variability in the price?

All of the "+4" stuff is synthetic isn't it? Wally World has their own brand of ATF+4 too. I've been using the Amsoil Universal ATF in my 727DD with a bottle of Red Lubeguard thrown in. Transmission blood is not a fluid I'm all that interested in saving money on.

But to answer your question, I don't remember seeing a recent comparison of different transmission fluids. Nice pan, by the way.

If you don't want to buy it from the dealer, go to Wal-Mart and buy the MOPAR ATF+4 for around $4. 50/qt. It is great fluid and if the manufacturer is going to be on the hook for 70,000 miles up to unlimited mileage on passenger cars they would not be recommending it either. Save the receipt if your under warranty.

Some will argue that other fluids are better, but my theory is it's better to change $4. 50 fluid twice as often as $9. 00 fluid anyway.

I agree on the cheaper fluid but I will not set foot in Walmart. That place is so anti-American it make me cringe.

Ahhhh - just how is Walmart anti-American?

Employees? Products? Not paying sales (enough) tax to the community?

Non-Union? Puts mom and pop stores out of business?

Think you can find all of the above at plenty of other stores of all types.

Darn Dodge was assembled in Sautillo, MX . . . and (at that time) owned by a

German Company that was REAL anti-American in the 40's, LOL!

wrong spot to post about wallmart and anti-american's but hog crap. if a company can offer a minimum wage or better supply 1000's with jobs and offer a product cheaper than mom and pop, more power to them. i will buy and continue to buy from wallmart, and as far as the question on transmission fluid? i have a suncoast full built trans and from them there recomendations were: do not use the high end stuff like amzoil, redline ect. they said any synthetic fluid in a atf+4 works fine if not better. "some of the fanncy brands have so much lubrication it actually cause things to slip more". i use valvoline the one in the blue bottle, i started out with redline and found my trans actually shifts and works better with the cheaper blue bottle. hope this helps

Walmart ussually just displaces people though!!!

close a local group of small shops with low overhead and then claim to reduce unemployment?

Around here the management threatens to fire employees who remove the 'made in America' sign that is placed on racks of chinese clothes.

I have seen it.

It is still a free country, until the next election, maybe not much longer, if Obama gets elected, so we can go or not go where we choose as long as fuel prices haven't taken away our buying power.

Check the -"Made in . . . "- tag in a shirt from *any* big name store!

Around here - a Wally opens up and other businesses - large and small -
open up around it. Generates more businesses & employment!

A large (baby stuff) store closed in the same center as a Wally nearby - and a very
expensive Sporting Goods store (several in the So. CA area) opened
in the vacated building - after extensive remodeling.

The Sporting Goods company (Sport Chalet) does extensive site searches prior to locating in an area -
guess they're not too worried about the Wally merchandise or WAY cheaper
prices on many of the same items - or any supposed low class Wally shoppers.
(Of course they carry lots of things that Wally doesn't)

Walmart likes to train it's employees how to collect from the government to make up for their low pay and lack of benefits. They pass the savings onto us in cheaper prices.

I just stay away from that store.

In my opinion the lack of jobs problem is the fault of our Government. They will never do it but if they would abolish the ILLEGAL IRS people would spend the money not being confiscated by the ILLEGAL IRS and the demand for goods and services would create all the jobs needed. There is enough revenue without the ILLEGAL IRS if our wonderful Politicians would not throw away money on useless projects and foreign aid. The cost of operating the ILLEGAL IRS is over 8 BILLION per year. If the upcoming election goes the wrong way we will get our taxes raised. The money will go for a good cause. That is if you believe in Socialism.

what????

amsoil sucks? is that what i'm hearin'... ... ... . please, i have a truck which i use hard, not beat on, but use hard. i changed my trans. fluid @20k, then @40k, w/ amsoil (as with everything) and guess what... . it runs great. in fact with the power i'm running, people can't believe i haven't dropped my trans. on

I-91. as far as walmart, its like every other large chain store in good ol' america. they prey on what corporate america has done to us... ... . made us poor and let us - 'just get by'; so we can go spend our hard earned money on mostly 'crap'! yes, they put the mom's and pop's out of business. they cater to the same people that think 4 square meals are mcdonalds burgers, fries, soda, and a sundaes. do i go there? yep, for fishing and hunting supplies, underwear, deoderant, shampoo, gum, even some of the johnny lightning cars (only if they are mopar, of course). but seriously, i have gone the extra mile with all fluids; in my cars, trucks, and in the ol' ladys suv, too! when people say, 'that oil is made at the same place as that oil, its all the same'... ..... its not. theres my 2 cents... thats all i can afford, anyway. :-laf

Sorry for the continued hijack - couldn't resist!

In Re: Wally & Chinese stuff . . . .
Heard on the news tonight a US firm got the contract for the USA Olympic uniforms.

They promptly contracted with a Chinese mfgr (in China) to make the uniforms . . . incl one for Pres. Bush.

Democracy & capitalism - in action, LOL!

10-9er......

i bet that our olympic team doesn't get their uniforms till they get to china... ... so, 'corporate america' can save some $, pocketing the rest. i mean, the olympics used to be about the ameteur athletes, but i dont believe it is anymore. im mean, were sending pro basketball players over there instead of collegiate... ..... doesn't that suck! i know this belongs in another forum, but, it's here... ... ... ... ... .

i have a 08 dually with 6 speed auto. love the truck and transmission. time to change fluid. anyone know about type of fluid to use. checked at a oil change place and was told there was a special fluid for the 6 speed. i run hot shot and need to do something quick and don't want to go the dealer. any advise?
