I just changed my transmission fluid (35K) and installed a temperature sensor. I noticed some metal particles around the magnetic in the pan. The truck seems to be shifting fine.

Is this typical after only 35K miles?:(

Can anybody tell me where this could be coming from and what I can do about it.

I have also read in the owners manual that you should have your bands thightened or adjusted after 35K is this a true statement? Should I bring the truck in for a check up on the transmission?

Need your upon.

A "salt and pepper" deposit of FINE particles is normal for these trannies as a characteristic of normal internal clutch pack wear - LARGE particles over several servicings might be cause for concern. If the transmission is fairly new, the specified band adjustment is a good idea, since a greater degree of component seating and wear-in is likely occurring than will happen after the transmission has been longer in use...

It is totally normal to have a layer of crud on the magnet in your transmission pan. Causes for concern will be large amounts of aluminum or brass. If you start seeing that it is not good. A few flecks of both in the black gunk is normal. From what you say I would guess that your transmission is totally normal.

RaginCajun:: Have you seen a similar thread on the Engine and Drive Train forum. Check "Auto Trans Bands Adj" by B Jerominski.

Good Info.

These trannys seem to have lots of metal in the pans. More so id say, much more so than GM'. My dad's 2001 CTD had only 7K on it when i installed the DTT TC,VB,and update kit, with just 7k the pan had junk in it,not a lot mind you,but more than his Impala SS had in over 100K of operation, with turned up power.

A 10 micron, spin on filter will stop all that. Get a wood splitter return line filter & mounting block, and splice it into the line going to the hot side of the oil cooler. They flow 20 gal. per min, & have 3/4" fittings. About $20 bucks, I've had mine for 150k miles, & no discoloration or shavings in the pan. No transmission trouble either. Each time I've dropped the pan to change the internal filter, & wondered why I bothered, The spin on caught it all even the discoloration. It's mounted just behind the front bumper on the drivers side. I think the internal filter only gets down to 40 or 50 micron.

Mine is made by "Cross". it's actually a hydraulic filter, I bought it at Tractor Supply, but almost any Farm & Ranch supply store with hydraulic cylinders & stuff will have it, filter included. Just get some brass 3/4" to 1/2" barb fittings, & some good stainless clamps. The housing is aluminum, and has a check valve with directional arrow, just make sure the flow goes the right direction. It also has an 1/8" port too incase you want to put a trans temp sensor in it & get readings before it gets the cooler.

JPS

I just ordered an external trans filter from SummitRacing.com. The one I ordered is made by Perma Cool (Summit part number PRM-10677). You can get the kit without a temp gauge for $30 and with a temp gauge for $80. You won't have to do any improvising to mount this kit.

I am surpirsed more folks are not using external trans filters. I just changed my ATF and was also surprised and alarmed by the curd in the bottom of the pan.

I ordered my first one from Summit, but sent it right back. It had little 3/8" in/outlets, & pickup's were bigger than that. The Cross unit form Tractor Supply was basically the same thing only heavier & with bigger passages. I had to size it down from 3/4" pipe threads to 1/2 barb, to hook the hose up to it. "

Dennis, Really like your idea! Makes a lot of sense to me. Any chance of posting a pix of your mounting? Would also like to know what brand and size filter you are using.

Thanks. Dave
