Automatic Transmission

My 93 D350 CC has an automatic transmission. I am not sure what model automatic. What is the best way to "bullet proof" it. I plan on adding the additional underbed cooler this summer.

Its a 518 transmision. Anyone that promises you a bullet proof transmision drive away very fast.

I know its a term often used,however there is always a bigger bullet. Nothing in my personal opinion is bullet proof.

My suggestion to you for getting the best bang for your buck is to order a transmission from Chrysler and do the mods to that one.

Hear me out i know i sell transmissions and this may be counter productive to my business, however when you buy a trans from Chrysler for the 1993 and earlier Rams you get these options.

Heavy Duty Case
Heavy Duty New planetary gears
Improved OD unit

These parts alone in an aftermarket shop like myself and the others out there will cost you an arm and a leg.

Doing the mods to a brand new trans is better than re-building yours.

Most of these earlier trucks have considerable mileage on them so when the transmissions are rebuilt the odds of someone putting new gears , new case, new drums, new vb, new od unit lets just say the chances are pretty slim. If they did all that and re-built the trans it would be double the dealer price.

It is more cost effective for you to get one from Chrysler and do a vb and converter upgrade to that transmission.

Bill - would you have a ballpark price for a new 727 AT for the early non-OD Ram 250's? Perhaps a pointer for some lower priced supplier than CC might quote? I'm at 106,000 miles on my '91, and tho' it SEEMS in perfect condition, I like to keep abreast of all my options...

I know Bill didnt see this email,i checked his mail log, he keeps a log of anything he posts on this one must haved been cleared off the board before he had a chance to read it.

Thanks for your informative reply to my question. It is responses such as yours that make this board all the more valuable. Additionally, it kinda answers a question I had regarding Chrysler minivan transmissions (I know not a diesel). After going through two rebuilt ones in about 30k miles each, I figure the smart money is just to buy a new replacement from Chysler.
