Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Lost 5th gear nut

I have a 1998 Dodge Ram Cummins, 2 WD, 125,000 miles. Everything is stock on the truck. I tow a travel tailer about 3-5 times a year. Coming home from my last trip to central Tennessee the transmission started to act a little funny. I tow out of overdrive in the hills. When I would hit some of the hills, my speed would drop down 45MPH before the transmission would kick into another gear. When it did kick in the RPM's would get up 2700-2800, then it would slowly pick up speed before the RPM's would drop back to about 2200.

Before this happened, when my speed would drop back to around 50MPH the transmission would kick in keep my speed around 50MPH. The RPM never got up 27-2800RPM. I was wondering if anybody has had problem like this? I have been told my torque converter is slipping. I thought I might get some suggestions before I it checked out. I did make it home okay.

Thanks for any help.

What you are describing could be the converter. It usually slips first before other clutches go. Have you changed the fluid?

Nothing lasts forever...

When my Auto was stock, it too would lag after a downshift on a grade except that you could definitely feel the truck leap forward when the lock-up clutch would engage. It sounds like you’re lock-up clutch is going bye-bye. Probably time to consider on planning your next strategy.

I haven't been on for awhile. Moving and surgeries. The transmission finally got fixed. What the transmission was doing is called surging. I took it into the dealer and they cleared the computer card and reprogramed it. So far, everything seems to be working okay.
