Hi Guys! I bought my father's '92 W250 5 spd with 245k. I am in the process of fixing her up. Anyway, here's my problem--I bought Autometer gauges (tach, boost, pyro) and a three gauge dash mount pod. The #2697 tachometer does not come with any alternator pick-up mechanism like it's big brother #2888. It just comes with 2 wires. Is there any way that I can hook this puppy up or get ahold of some kind of pick-up for the alternator?

hmmmm, it sounds like it's a gasser tach... not sure if there's a way to wire that sucker up. Some of the 92's and 93's had some kind of under dash wiring that if memory serves will work with an ISSPRO tach... . but man I'm not even 25% sure...

Yeah the 2888 has the alternator pick-up feed but that's the only one I know of that is like that.

The 92 and 93 models should have a plug under the dash on thetop side of the steering colum that is marked tach. They use the signal from the pickup coil as the input to the tach. Depending on your harness, connections, pickup coil, etc, it sometimes does not work correctly on the tach. You should be able to get the alternator kit seperately from autometer if you need to got hat route.

From what I've read after doing a search, it seems that the 2697 requires a square wave input, while our trucks only emit a pulse at the rate of 2 pulses per revolution. I don't think that the connection under the dash will work for this tach. I have looked for an Autometer pick-up like on the 2888, but I have come up empty. Please give me some more ideas...

I may be wrong, but I think you are going to have to get a different tach. As you noted, the input requirements are different -- I'm not aware of a way to easily change that.

I've had an Autometer with the alternator pickup that I've had on 3 different trucks over the last 7 years -- it always has worked great. Not sure of the part # but the face says "Diesel" and the scale goes to 4k. Usually the scale on the diesel tachs is lower than the gassers.

If you find a way to make it work, I'd love to hear it!

I got a reply back from Autometer. Here's what they say:

"I am sorry, your 2697 will not work with your diesel. It is more than just

using a probe. All of the circuitry is different. You will need to exchange it

for a #2888. "

I think I am going to get an ISSPRO since I want to stick with the 2 1/16" gauges in my dash mount triple pod.

Check the depth of that gage pod. The Isspro will not fit into a autometer steering column pod. It is to long. It is about 1. 5" longer than the 2697 tach. The dash light socket is at the top of the tach. It might cause you problems.

I have one of the Tiny Tach gas models on my large lawn mower -- for the hour meter function. It works very well, never had any problems with it. Plus it's nice not guessing at maintenance intervals on a $1200 lawn mower engine.
