I have a 45 gal. aluminum aux. fuel tank that I had in a 92 Dodge Cummins. It was mounted in the bed behind the cab and plumbed through a 12v fuel pump and a filter and into a "T" fitting in the truck tank fill vent line under the bed. I just turned on a lighted dash mounted switch and the pump started transfering fuel to the truck tank.

I am now installing it into my 98 Dodge.

Is it the way to go to plumb it into the vent line on this truck or is there an inlet somewhere on top of the truck fuel tank that would be more viable?

If so is it accessable w/o removing the tank?

The only problem I found with the vent line method was that the vent would be full of diesel and would not vent well when filling the truck tank. It gurgled and belched awhile until it was clear.

Any info or ideas would be appreciated.

Jack, I went through the same thing and finally solved the venting problem. I believe there is one fitting on top of the tank that could be used as a fill point but it is difficult to get to. What I did (initally) was to put an H fitting in the rubber vent line fitting. This worked but the aux tank would gurgle and the aluminum sides would go in and out. One answer would have been cut the metal part of the vent line and put a T in there for the aux tank vent. This looked like more of a challenge than I was willing to take.

What I ended up doing was putting a T in the aux tank vent line, right where the line comes out of the tank. This T went, through a 5/16 hose to a fuel valve normally used to change from one fuel tank to another, and then to a fuel filter that just vents to the air above the tank. The fuel filter just keeps dust and bugs out of the vent line. The fuel valve used was an AC Delco U7002 from Advanced Auto (their stock # is 18051447) and was less than $40. Of course the fuel filter inlet air has be be above the aux tank and the 12V fuel valve is wired to the aux tank 12V pump. This setup works perfect and will not allow diesel fuel to run out of your aux tank during the hot Alaska summer days. Hope this helps.

Aux. Tank

I put a marine thru the bulkhead 3/8" fitting in the OEM fuel filler neck to transfer fuel, and then took a 3/4" vent line from the aux tank and with a 3/4" 'T' in the OEM vent line. No vapor back up, and fast filling of both tanks was the result.

Transfer flow uses a 'y' adaptor on the vent line, I have never had a problem with venting. Never had a problem on my last 2 trucks. The cost is probably undr $10.
