I HAVE AN EARLY 91 DODGE CUMMINS TRUCK WITH AN AUX TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER ON THE DRIVERS SIDE IN FRONT OF THE REAR WHEEL WELL. THIS OIL COOLER HAS AN ELECTRIC FAN ON TOP. MY QUESTION IS DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT TEMPERTURE THE OIL MUST REACH BEFORE THE FAN COMES ON? I'VE CONTACTED THE LOCAL DODGE DEALER BUT NO HELP. I CAN NOT FIND ANYTHING IN MY BIG DODGE REPAIR MANUAL EITHER. MAYBE ITS IN THE POWERTRAIN MANUAL WHICH I DONT HAVE. THANKS CHARLES

Chris, you need to drive the truck more often so it will get broken in!:D Only 75,000 miles? man, that is low miles for a first gen, let alone a 91!



I think I have the number you are looking for at home. I'll try to find it tonight if someone doesn't have an answer. I think it is around 190 degrees but can't remember for sure. I know that when mine kicks on it can be heard real easy. Doesn't normally turn on unless I'm towing.



I also rigged a switch so I can turn it on manually. That way I can turn it on at the bottom of a hill and not wait till it gets hot first.
 
I didn't even know I had one until I shut down, after climbing a hill in the summer. It was already on when I shut down and I couldn't figure out what the noise was.



A year later I kept hearing a banging noise and found out that I only had 2 of the 4 bolts holding it up and they were both loose. They were some kind of shock mount with rubber inserts. I couldn't find anything like them so I bolted it with sheet metal screws.



It seems like a lot of us have these coolers. Was this a factory option?
 
No, the aux trans cooler was not a factory option it was a dealer installed option that used an approved kit. As with all Dealer options when they EOL we are SOL cuz they were usually some off the wall back street low bid outfit that supplied them till they went broke. As far as finding parts, the parts man needs to start digging in the back room for all the cross over books from that year and later to see what happened to the part number cuz it don't show in the computer anymore. Two problems with that, finding a parts man that can do something more than punch keys and say "I can't find it", and when you finally track the the part number it was in 92 and has now been switched to and they punch it in the computer it will probably read NS1. Just for clarification, thats the same as SOL. Been there, done that, aftermarket here we come!
 
Phil - Check Ace Hardware or similar stores. The local ones have them, and they're normally in the plastic trays above the bolt bins. Can't remember what the "proper" name is right now. :p
 
Charles, looks like I lied! Can't find the info on the coolers. Did a search and found one guy said it came on at 180 degrees. Mine kicks on around 195.



For anyone looking for this type cooler, take a look at the B&M cooler in Summit Racing catalog. It is 3. 5" thick,9" x 13. 5" in size, and has a 9. 5" fan mounted on it. Should work pretty good . Also has 1/2" NPT fittings. For referenc, cost is a little over $200.

The proper name for these things that hold the cooler up, and provide a bit of vibration isolation, is a "wellnut".



I looked in most of the hardware and marine stores in Alaska till I finally found them at the Ace in Fairbanks.

Do any of you auto guys have the oil (trans fluid?) cooler mounted under the exhaust manifold? Mom's if the only truck I've seen it on, but hers is also the only auto I ever had (aside from the ex's 84 6. 9, but we wont go there today). Guess I could follow the lines and see where they go, huh?:rolleyes:

Yep, that should be the factory install postion. Your manual should have the same thing minus the trans cooler lines running into it or I as confused as you?
 
OK Carl and Daniel, that was a test to see if anyone really reads my posts!:D Got it changed now.



Sure would like to hear from someone that has tried these Summit coolers.

I just ordered a cooler from Bill at DTT. It's 21"x11"x1 1/4" with 1/2" id in and out, made by Truecool. Twice as big as anything else I was able to find. If this doesn't do the trick I don't know what will.

Jbolt is correct. Mine turns on at from 220-230 degrees. This was a factory installed item when ordered.
