Cummins tricycle on Monster Garage

Gear Vendor Overdrive units are very nice units. I have installed several over the years. Biggest advantage I see with them is leaving the transmission in drive or 4th gear and still having the overdrive capability. Cost wise, they are nearly as much as a NV-4500 new so I guess it is a preference as to whether to rebuild the transmission from towing in 5th or pay out for the gear vendors once and be done with it.

The gear vendor units are based off of the older Volvo overdrive units they would put behind the trannies in their medium duty trucks. They will take alot of load with no problem. There are a few guys using the older Volvo units and scavenging up adapters from Gear Vendors to mount them in their pickups.

If you do blow out a Gear Vendor, you'll first loose reverse then it will lock up in one or the other ranges. Usually 1 to 1 range.

My buddy Kenny has used one of their units in an alcohol dragster with no problems, it is actually now living its days out in his cummins powered GM crew cab.
