Auxiliary fuel tank question?

I have a few questions about running an auxiliary fuel tank, I may put one in my truck. Any and all info welcome. Thank you.

How many gallons do you have?

What brand tank, and style?

Do you have it hooked up to flow to the truck tank, or do you have it set to your fuel pump?,or do you just pump it in to the truck tank?

How many of you have had you truck tank or auxiliary tank dipped?

And also been busted?

I run only highway fuel but have never been checked. I think getting checked by DOT is more likely with hay or livestock because farmers often have red fuel on their farms/ranches. Also commercial vehicles are more likely. However, one fine will negate your savings for many years, so it is a very risky move.



I have Transfer Flow systems in both my Rams. They use the TRAX computer to automatically transfer 4-5 gallons to the main tank when it is low. This saves me from forgetting, either to put fuel into the main tank, or to shut off the transfer valve before fuel spills onto the road(don't laugh, it can happen and negates any savings you made getting fuel at a cheaper place).

My 1997 uses the 54 gallon TF replacement tank and the 98 gallon aluminum diamond plate cross-the-bed tank. My 2004 uses the stock 35 gallon tank underneath and the "wedge" 74 gallon cross-the-bed aluminum diamond plate tank. The wedge allows a better view of the bed for hooking up a 5th wheel or gooseneck trailer.



Transfer Flow is not the cheapest. BUT, they send you a complete kit, the tank is beautifully made and welded, is cleaned out twice at the factory, and fits perfectly. I feel they offer an excellent value, and their installation charge at Chico CA is quite reasonable.



They have been offering a substantial discount on installation, via a coupon given out at May Madness, the past couple years.

I've got two.

115 Gallon Box style by Dually Depot

70 Gallon 'L' shape with tool box. Don't know the brand.

I use a manual switch and keep the tanks seperate. (Sometimes I really do just transfer fuel. )

Never been dipped.



(edit) I should add that I have a very dark canopy on one truck and keep the bed out of site on the other. Trying hard not to be the squeaky wheel.

Transerflo 98 gallon diamond plate installed by Dan's Service in Elkhart. Works great. Gauge tells me gallons in each tank, all transfer is done automatically. Very easy!!

I have an 80 gallon saddle tank off of a Frieghtliner in a cradle in the back of my truck with a small Bosch electric pump to transfer it to the main.

50 gallon, homemade (professionally built though), no gauge, pumps into main tank via carter (napa) low pressure/high volume pump. It sits in the front of the bed, but only when canopy is on. Switch in cab, transfer on the fly.

Transfer Flow 98 gallon aluminum tank in the bed. They offer the highest quality, turn-key kit on the market in my opinion. Not the cheapest, but worth every penny.

99 gal. L shape aluminum bright tread from Tractor Supply. I plumbed it to the factory vent line with a low pressure pump, the switch is located on my quad pillar guage mount. I just watch my fuel guage while it's pumping so it won't overflow.
