Fuel went down to $1. 31 yesterday, so I thought I had better fill up the OEM tank and the auxiliary (90 gal. ) today. Auxiliary was down to about 5/8 and only held 20 gal. , however I didn't cram it completely full. It is a 90 gal. tank and I expected it to take more. Do any of you who have auxiliary tanks find that they have a natural "pad" built into the fuel gauge set-up? If this trend follows to when the gauge reads empty, I should have about 15 gal. left. Any of you who have auxiliary fuel tanks, I would appreceiate hearing your experiences with your tanks and gauges. Mine is an American Fuel Tank & Tool Box Combo. Happy with it so far, but wondering how far I can run it without running out of fuel. I filled the OEM tank up at the same time and put 31 gal. in it and I had run it to dead empty and 5 miles left on the distance till empty on the computer. I guess it's got a "pad" in it too. Thanks for any info.

I've been snooping around, researching aux tanks for a while now and here's what I've heard from various sources (mfgr's and end users)... .

Yes, a tank, any tank, has to have room for 'expansion'. You can force the issue and 'top it off', but you give up the extra room for expansion. That's not good. So your 90 gal in reality is probably a 95 or 98 gallon... .

The OEM tank is notorious for showing empty and no miles on the computer, with still 7 gallons in the tank. Best excuse I've heard is that it is a built in 'buffer' to minimize the possibility of your running out of fuel and all that that entails. Others have said that DC is using the fuel sender for the half ton tank in the 3/4 ton... . One fella wrote that he took out his tank and bent the float down a tad and now it reads empty with 2 gallons left... .

Heres what I do. You should run a couple of tanks through it. Look at your guage and see what it says. Fill up and remember how much it holds, next time you will know exactly how much is left and therefore know how much farther to go. I have a 66 aux. tank and the oem 35. I continously put in 88 to 90 gallon on fuel stops. I figure that is close enough to empty. Then a bottle of power clean treats 100 gallon, works out just fine. Hope I helped!
