Fuel tank thingie

I picked up a fuel tank, actually it was given to me on the weekend. It is made out of aluminum with a diamond plate finish.

It has a filler spout with a threaded outlet at the bottom.

Question... ... ... ... ... does anyone know if this can be plumbed into the existing setup? My instincts say no. I seem to recall reading somewhere diesel fuel systems operate on a return principle.

So I guess what I have is big jerry can.

Has anyone rigged up one of these into the bed of their pick up?

As usual your guidance is appreciated.

Transfer Flow and many others make fuel tanks that plumb into your existing fuel system. Diesel fuel systems arent that much different than gassers if I understand correctly(though my understanding of gas engines is they take gasoline and have spark plugs)- they both have supply and return lines. I would prefer the simplicity of a pump on the tank and just put the nozzle into the tank to fill the factory tank. Adding in the lines and switches and sensors just sounds like an accident waiting to happen, IMO.

Why not just put in a draw tube and a return in the top?

Keep the botom plugged. That would be like a boat engine set up. Simple.

You can but a nice plastic draw tube with an aluminum fitting for about $10. Use one for feed, one for return. Cut the tubes to fit... about 1/2 inch off the bottom at a 45 deg angle.

Done deal.

I have the same thing on mine. Electric fuel pump and filter mounted under the box and the output line plumbed into the filler neck. Works great but don't forget to shut the pump switch off when your driving down the road. Who ever is trailing gets a diesel bath. :(

I like Cerberusiams idea of an aux fuel pump and filter to fill the regular tank.

You could even use the auxilary fuel tube on top of the tank if you didn't want to modify the filler neck.

That is exactly what I was thinking of doing when I learned what that extra fitting on top was.

BTW, did they all have that extra auxilary fuel line that only sucked down to 1/4 tank or so?

This thread has a picture of mine. It is the big line with no hose on it.

Tank is a 93.
