I was going to change my rear axle fluid myself and was wondering if the front axle is just as easy? I have a 1999 4X4.

Is Amsoil 75w-140 synthetic good for the front also?

Thanks Ty:)

Permatex RTV in either blue or gray is fine. Be sure you get all the old RTV scraped off. Let the new RTV set up five to ten minutes after re-installing the cover, before you start adding gear lube back into the axles. You'll need to find a parking lot and drive in figure-8's a few times to throw the gear lube up into the anti-spin clutches.

I am getting the much awaited Mag Hytec front cover next week, and will get a couple extra of them :D

It was redesigned after I discussed its features with Roy and Jerry at Tulare in October. The bottom will be angled and very thick to serve as a skid plate in case you hit a big rock in the trail. IMHO this cover will be a must-have for all 4x4s. I am currently running a very ugly but functional steel skid plate over the equally ugly stock cover :( Not at all in keeping with the MagHytec cover on the back. It's time to change the diff lube anyway. . . Jerry is sending me some LE607 to put in there.

So as you change your lube, think about what will happen when that thin steel stamping hits a rock. I had it happen once.

The Amsoil 140 is kind of overkill up front, but won't hurt anything.

I use the Series 2000 75-90 up front.

CAN"T WAIT for the front cover, a long time coming!

Gasket #

Napa Cork Gasket #P18562 Front and Rear Diff. Somebody posted this months back. This is what they said they found. When my son changed his he used Grey Permatex and it has not leaked. When I changed mine I used grey and about 30000 later it was seeping. I drained it and used black rtv this time, let it cure a day before I added oil and its still dry 50000+now. Maybe I just didn't clean it good enough the first time. As the years go by (53)I screw up more.
