From the manual on my 2003 HO 3/4 ton 4x4, the lubricant level on both front and rear axles say 1/4 " + or - 1/4 inch from the bottom of the filler hole. In other words, level with the bottom of the filler hole to 1/2" below is the allowable range, right?

My front axel was OK but the rear axle is low. So much for PDI.

Well, that's just not right. I bought 2 quarts of synthetic and the labor was $15. 00 for filling the axles and checking the transmission and transfer case. I'm sending the bill to the dealer. We'll see what happens.

What's really annoying is that I told the dealer twice about checking the axles after what I learned on TDR. That really bugs me.

OH good heavens, I forgot they did not check the transfer case

it's a good thing you mentioned it in your post! I will crawl back under and check the case oil level.

Update: Yes, I received a refund for the lubricant and labor. Also, I noticed when reviewing paperwork that the doc fees had been entered twice and brought this to the attention of the dealer. They also refunded the fee. They sure didn't have to do that as there was a signed purchase contract. I was very impressed.

My salesman was Chad Jones at Worland (Wyoming) Ford-Chrysler (800-653-2306). Their deal beat Dave Smith by several hundred dollars. This was the most pleasant buying experience I've ever had and I've bought quite a few vehicles in the last 40 years (probably way too many).

new 03

just picked up my new 03 2500 4x4, had to bring it back for "dealer service" (clean up etc), since I bought it on the weekend and there was no one around! talked to the service rep and told him that I heard some trucks coming through with low fill levels. gave me the "I never heard of that" routine, I am thinking that I will have to get under it myself when I get home and check, told him once again that on the TDR website several posts on low fluid levels, did not say a thing, but when I got a copy of parer work, he had typed check front, rear diff's and transfer case fluid level!!!

I think this could be a 1st class dealer!!??

:p well I'll be, picked up the truck tonight, asked about the fluid levels, service rep said both front and rear were down almost 1/2 quart!:--) told me he is passing the word and supposedly they will start checking every new truck coming in! He thanked me for pointing it out!

Now tomorrow, I'll guess I'll get the wrench out and double check!!!Oo. What did Regan say "trust but verify"???

Diff. Level????

Hello! I already have a post on this topic in another forum... ... ... . but I thought this post was related to mine. I was curious about lubricant levels for those who have installed a Mag-Hytec cover on their 03's???? So this morning I removed my stock differential pan and measured where the oil level should be according to DC. After installing my Mag-Hytec I measured the lubricant level to where it should show on the Mag cover which was 1/4 inch below the fill-plug hole. Note: the fill plug hole is in the middle of the cover. If I were to fill the new cover with the lubricant and match the level like the old pan then according to my dip-stick on the Mag Hytec... ... its barely shows up. I already have taken a test drive with the new cover and with the lubricant below the fill-plug and didnt notice any sounds coming from the gear set. I am really concerned though that there isnt enough fluid in there. For those who have Mag-Hytec covers please respond and let me know how high you filled your diff. Thanks for letting me post on this forum!!! Happy 4th!!!
