I have a friend with a 70 in a CTD. He tows a 20 ft goosnect stock trailer a lot and has had the pleasure of having the 70 rebuilt twice now. They just don't carry the weight as well.
I am driving my second CTD. Both have had the Dana 70, both tow heavy fairly often, old one still does(I know who has it), and I know the old one is over 100,000, no problem, and my new one has 87000 on it, no problem either. Good luck.
I just swapped a dana 70 for a dana 80. had to shorten the drive shaft 2". Might want to take a look at the dimensions of that dana 70 before you get started. That was on a 98 2500, and i used a dana 80 out of a 96 3500
The 2500 manuals do not have a full Dana 80, it is a hybrid, 80 center section and tubes to the spring perches, then it is the same as the 70. As far as I know the wheel bearings are the same on both axles and that is the limiting factor for the weight rating, both the auto and manual 2500 have the same GVW. I am not sure but I think that you would need the spring U-bolt caps from a 70 to bolt it up, and a longer drive line.
