Is the axle ratio identified by the VIN number? If so which digit?

I don't believe so. You can look on the ID tag on the axle to find it. If it's not on the pumpkin anymore, you can get the BOM number off the tube and look it up.

Mine has a tag under the hood that give axle ratio etc.

Yeah, that's true. The trucks we have at work have 7. 17s in them
