Question,
I am always reading about axle ratios and don't understand EXACTLY what they stand for, any help (I know a 4. 10 is lower than a 3. 54)?

Also I'm always reading about 4. 10's and 3. 54's... ..... Am I the only guy with a 3. 55?

Thanks,
Ron

Just went outside and looked mine says 3. 5 and leaves out the next digit. Maybe it has something to do with auto and manual transmissions.

Ron the numbers stand for the relationship between the drive shaft and the axles. A 4:10 gear ratio simply means that the drive shaft turns 4. 1 revolutions to every revolution the axle turns. hope this helps. Pete

I counted the ring gear and pinion gear teeth on my Dana 70 LSD when installing my Mag-Hytec diff. cover, as numerous posters on the Happy Campers BB as well as the CDW BB were wondering which ratio listed by DC was correct (3. 54:1 or 3. 55:1). The actual ratio when correctly rounded off is 3. 54:1.

You may also hear- "changed tire sizes to 245/19. 5 now my ratio is 3. 73" this is not correct. The gear ratio stays the same. the revolutions per mile are different. It is more than a mouthfull to say "my effective final drive was changed by different tires to act like a 3. 73 ratio on a stock setup. " The most important thing is RPM at the speed you want to do in what gear. Gear ratio and overdrive ratio and tire size all are a factor. If you can cruise at torque peak or just above you will get good response and good mileage.
