My axle wheel seal is gone on my dana 80. What size is the hub nut? I think its around 2 9/16 is this right? Also what should it be torqued down to?

Thanks

Mike

Axle hub seal

Can't help you with the nut/wrench size, the manual just lists tool # DD-1241-JD. The torque on the nut is as follows, tighten nut to 120-140 ft. lbs. while rotating wheel. Back off nut 1/8 turn and install locking wedge. bg

2 9/16 with rounded corners. Your local truck supply store (not autoparts) should have it in something like the OTC line - they have one for Dana axles (60, 70, 80 all same???) Good luck to ya--itsa fun job. Much funner than the front axle!!!

If you have a dial indicator, set up the bearing clearance to be . 001-. 010". I set mine a . 002". This is after following the torque proceedure mentioned above.

My rear axle seal is going, too. At least that's my guess... gear lube on the back of the tire, in the wheel well, etc. I don't have time to fix it this weekend. Anybody know how long I can drive like this? Fluid level in the diff is fine - 1/4" below the fill plug.

TIA

Thanks for the info. So now all I have to do is:

a) Check fluid level when parked and

b) Watch for flames in rearview while driving. Oo.

I can do that.

Your also safe until the one side gets oil soaked and don't stop. Then the sharp 90 degrees get you attention. :rolleyes: Specially peop in the next lane!!!!:{
