I AM REPLACING THE REAR AXLE SEALS AND BRAKES ON MY 96 4X4 . CAN ANYONE HELP ME WITH THE MOST UP TO DATE PART NUMBERS? ALSO ARE AFTER MARKET PARTS AVALABLE WITH THE SAME QUALITY AS MOPAR?
Napa has them, they are really common, but the most important part of the seal is proper installation. These are easy to do, along with the brakes, but take time to do it right.
I've screwed a few up on the install - always get at least one more than you need - it's easier to retun the one you don't need than to stop work and waste time picking up another one - get new wheel bearing adjusting nut lock wedges too. Both the seal and the lock wedges are common parts. Make SURE you place silicon on the outter metal edge of the seal before installing it, I always put a bit on the housing to seal surface too. If you don't you may find yourself replacing brakes again in another few hundred miles or so. Also make sure the seal is tapped flat into the axel tube, then like caulking the bath tub smooth the silicon.
Make sure (since it's all apart) that the star adjuster is clean and well lubed (I take apart, clean up with solvent and lube with anti-seeze), remove any burrs/grooves on the perch's where the shoes ride on the brake plate. Consider a smear of white grease this will help reduce bind. Don't forget to check those drums.
