Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Axle Shaft Seals...?

Rolling around under my 99 today and noticed a very wet looking lower ball joint area on the left side; the entire lower nuckle was covered. Nice star type dispersion pattern around the wheel/tire also. No noises, front fluid 1/4" low, never noticed a puddle. Is my driver's side axle shaft seal gone?

it is possibe the seal has started to leak a little. I wouldn't worry about it unless you can see that there is freash oil there and it is running down the tire. from what I hear, it is an involved process to change that seal.

The seal may not be gone, but its probably going. If you are going to repair it yourself, I would start getting parts and tools together now. I would also consider replacing ball joints, axle u-joints, and the pass. side seal. Everything has to come apart anyways. A diff. spreader is not required, but recommended.

You can get one cheaper on Ebay. The other parts I would recommend Quad4x4. They have parts kits with great videos included. You need to consider how much your time is worth. Its probably a weekend job for a shade-tree mechanic.
