Can a set of 01 axles with ABS go under a 97 with ABS. The only thing that I know that is different is the front axle ABS. The 97 has tone rings for abs and the 01 doesn't. Anybody done this or heard of it before? Will the 01 ABS work on the 97 system?

can't answer your question specifically but i did swap a '96 dana 80 into my '01 and it was a direct bolt in except for the passenger side shock mount ...

both mounts faced the rear on the '96 and the pass side of the '01 faced forward ...

30 seconds with a torch and 2 minutes with some 7018 ac rod and all was good again ...

hope this helps

2B2S,

Thanks, I will. As the rear abs works the same, you confirmed my thoughts on the rear. The front one is the big question. Once again, thanks.

You will have to make sure that the rear axle does not have disc brakes or it will be a not go. I believe that the ABS is only in the rear axle with my experience and the front axles should have only minor complications.

94-99 the abs was an option on the front. I wish you were closer I would like to have the ABS assemblies off of the 97 so I could put it under my 01 with ABS. Why are you changing it out?

zstroken,

I'm want to change because I want to change the front wheel bearings for Dyna Trac's lock out hubs and real bearings. They don't make them for the 94-98. 5 trucks with tone rings for the abs. They only make them for the axles that don't have the ABS tone rings. So my friend is thinking about changing out his 01 axles and I would take them because the rear has the disk brakes and mine doesn't.

Want to sell the from the Ball joint out on yours current setup. I have a dana 60 with an ARB in it for the 30 spline and I would like to put it in my 01. 5. Problem is my 01. 5 has the ABS and my current 97 doesn't. I was thinking the 97 axle needs ball joints anyway. I could just put your set up on assuming it has good unit bearings and all.

zstroken,

As soon as I find out if an 01 abs will work on my rig, and my friend changes his axles. If you pay the shipping you can have it. My 97 has the abs. How does the abs on you 01. 5 work. Does it sense off of the bearing, axle splines or what?

zstroken,

Yes I'm in Alaska. On the 97 the you can see the tone ring which makes it on the outside of the constant velocity joint on the front axles. I noticed that on the newer trucks the pickup is up toward the middle top of the joint and the tone ring is not seen. That explaines a lot.

zstroken,

I'll try to take a couple of pictures on the tone ring and send it to you. As for shipping, I don't know, anywhere from a couple hundred to several hundred. I would just put it on a truck and have it hauled down the Alcan to civilization. But the big thing would be getting my friend to get his new axles and replace his old ones and I don't know his timeline for such a swap.
