I'm moving to az as most of you know and I was told today by the woman sending out my plates that I'll need to pass an emissions test:eek: will my truck do that????? specs are in my sig.

Yep, if you live in the metro area of Phoenix or Tucson, you have to pass a state run opacity test. You drive up ot the station when it is open, and they guide you onto the dyno rollers, where you procede to drive 55mph(or something like that). The maximum is in the range of 30%. I have a 1990, and it always measured less than 10%. The cost of the test is less than 15 bucks last time I had a test done. It is not a real big deal, just a pain.

You haven't done anything to the pump?

There were not any cats to worry about falling off, did you tell her it was a diesel? The stacks may be the only thing I see that might be a problem as the trucks didn't come stock with them. I put in a call to my brother as he lives in the Phoenix area and will know if the diesels need to be inspected.

Other than the dual stacks I don't think you would have a problem.

Having said that, I'm probably out in left field somewhere.

The opacity test is no big deal since it does not look like you have made changes to the pump, injectors, etc. My 93 is all stock right now except for the BHAF and it went through last year at 6% on a max of about 30%. I don't remember his name, but a 1st gen member in the Phoenix area with a CTD in his Suburban missed the mark by 2 or 3%, had to back his pump off just a bit to get it through the test, but his motor had some BOMBing on it! I was not aware that you had to get tested unless you live in the Tucson or Phoenix metros, maybe that has changed. Even so, it's not a big deal . . .

Chainsaw...

Worst case you could rotate the fuel eccentric pin back to "stock" for the test.

That's what I did last fall for my test. I got 1. 6% out of an allowed 40%.

After the test, rotate it back to "bomb".

There is some interesting reading there. "Report a smoking vehicle" The "costs" of said testing?

I figure this would be an infringement on my rights as a modified Diesel Jock.

What do they do for the Amish horse/buggy?

Yeah, I can pass with POD's if I back off the screw. I'm told there are better ways to do it, like pluging the boost line. When I test they don't put me on the rollers. In park, they have me run it at the governer for a bit and then let it idle. This is done several times. They hate it when I show up... don't know how to classify the burb. Does it have to confirm to 72' standards? or 90'? I love watching them scratch their heads!

There is a key to getting through AZ emissions with an older truck... . try the following:

1) When arriving at the emissions station, you will be asked to go throught 5 - 10 iterations of stomping on the accelerator to full RPM and holding it there for approx 10 seconds. They check for opacity during this acceleration phase.

2) I always measure my response and gently step on the accelerator to allow the turbo to spool up... . this reduces the smoke emissions.

3) I never hold the accelerator down for "full throttle"... . I will hold the throttle down 2/3 of the way, keeping the rpm's several hundred below the redline..... (Redline ain't good for this motor... . and the emissions folks have yet to guarantee me a rebuild if they grenade it. )

4) A friend of mine has fashioned a small block of wood to place under the accelerator that will keep the throttle at 2/3's ... may be a good idea.

5) Make certain that your pump has been reset at original settings (turn the screw back)

You should get through just fine as long as the motor is in good shape

I was talking with the dmv office in pheonix so that could solve my problem if not I'll look you all up for help. but presscot might save my butt!!!

You are moving to the Prescott area... ..... This is plain and simple... . Prescott is in Yavapai County and there are no emissions testing period in this county. Come on over... ... ...

I just did mine in the Phx. area, on Thurs. It was $27. 50. I slid the AFC back, tightened the spring and adjusted the linkage so it wouldn't go over about 2900 rpm. 40% is the allowable opacity and mine did exactly 0% - imagine that! But I barely had enough fueling to drive to the e-test place. I had a race with an unloaded Walmart semi, coming back and he beat me in a 2 block, light-to-light run. I normally adjust my AFC for minimal smoke. I just didn't want to take a chance of getting any crap from those dopes. I didn't see anyone do a "visual" for the cat and one guy only opened the hood far enough and long enough to see that it really had an engine. Mine was done in the doorway, with the rear of the truck outside - not even close to the dyno rollers. The e-test guys never got in the truck - I did all the throttle work. They don't want to be responsible for any sort of damage. Now that I know that, I will put a block of wood under the floormat next time, instead of screwing with the linkage. One guy watched closely to make sure I was putting it all the way to the floor. It's really a lame test without loading it on the dyno! Craig
