What is the size of the B-1 turbo-HX55? How does it compare to a PDR HX-40? Would a HX-40 work good enough to keep the egt's down on a 450hp engine? Or would it start to make more heat?

SixShooter,

The B-1 is a hybrid turbo, it is derived from components of several different turbos. So it doesn't really compare directly with any of the other current turbos by Holset. As for comparing to the Piers HX-40 I can't say for sure I have never run one... . But I do know of at least one member who is changing out his Piers HX-40 for a B-1.

Your post inquired about getting too hot. Well I guess that depends on what you consider too hot. I can hit 1500* in level 5 with my setup. But you need to remember that on these race/custom boxes they do not defuel above 2700 rpm like the standard boxes so they get pretty hot. In level 4 I can not get my egt's over about 1400*. What I can tell you is the B-1 brought my egt's down by over 300* from an HX-35. In level 5 with DDIII's with any single turbo out there you are going to get hot.

The biggest downside of the B-1 is cost... . They are not cheap (you would need to contact Kurt to see what the going rate is). The Piers turbo is about 1/2 what a B-1 runs! Now the B-1 is supposed to be one tough turbo. I know of at least one member who see around 60psi with his and has not had a failure. I see around 50-52 on mine and it is still running strong! Most of the guys running the HX-40 limit boost to below 40 psi.

Hope this helps,

Doug

For what it's worth, I have had my bone stock HX40/16 cm^2 housing since June 2001. I have drag raced hard with my Comp box on 5x5 at least 8 times, including 4 runs last weekend. I got it up to 40#'s boost every run, and never saw over 1250* EGTs. I hope my EGT gauge isn't lying to me...

But even on the dyno last year (with an EZ, before I got the Comp) I never saw over 32#'s boost and 1200* EGT with the HX40.

There is a slewwwww and I mean a slew werth of info on turbos out there on the net. Including flow charts and all the neccessary info one might want to know about a turbo. Garret makes any combination of turbo to meet your needs. I am sure the b-1 is a hybrid of various parts, but from what I have seen from garret, it could be easily one of the t04/t61 combos, depending on the exhaust and intake turbine specs, boost pressures, & of course desired lag time. I am sure an engineer savy tweeker could do it on their own. Isn't that what Kurt did??? The design behind his work takes out alot of engineering on your own personal end. So the price is well worth it. Bravo...
