Installing a drain plug on transmission pan. Silly question, Does the washer go on bottom of pan or inside pan before the nut? I assume bottom, but want to make sure before I put back together. In process of this now. Thanks!

Bottom of the pan.

However let me add something before you put this all togther.

(1) I throw that teflon washer right in the woods and replace it with a copper banjo bolt washer with the correct ID for the adapter (the ones that disc brake calipers use for the brake line connections)

(2) I seal the adaptor both inside and outside of the pan with a TINY bit of Mopar Black ATF proof RTV silicone gasket maker.

(3) I also obtain a copper washer with the correct ID to fit the little drain plug in the center. The o-ring that it comes with will crawl out when you try to tighten it.

I totally agree!

I had the same problems.

I installed my plug on the side of the pan as low as possible.

I have used the Mag Hytec pans on my two Ram's, love them.

Years ago, I installed one in a GM TH400 and it continually seeped ATF. After I brazed it to the pan, no more leaks. They may be manufactured from different metal now and brazing might not work.

Thanks gentlemen! I just didn't feel good about that washer. It was already trying to collapse before ever reaching 25 ft. Lbs. I have had it filled with water for an hour checking for leaks. Heading to hardware store now to get the copper one. Got you guys response just in time! I was about to stick pan back on. Thanks!

I never liked those add on drain plugs, done a couple years ago, they always drip at some point, try it and see, you can always replace the pan next filter change with one of the two company's that make them

I totally agree with you. Sounded like a great idea at the moment. Ordering a pan right away. Very displeased with this thing. Now I have a factory pan with a hole in it!

If you followed my instructions above and always use a back-up wrench when pulling the drain plug you won't have any leaks. I have two CTD's in the dooryard and both have the drain plug kit installed by me. No leaks from the drain kit on either truck or the two I owned before.

Also remember if you have a leak elsewhere above or in front it will collect on that drain nut as it is the lowest point. That can fool you into thinking that it is the culprit when really it is something else.

I am not going to spend the money for the fancy pans just to get a drain plug.

Some of those give trouble also if you do a little searching.

If I needed more cooling or something I would get one in a heartbeat, but I don't at this time. Change the fluid at 50,000 miles or sooner.

Saved that pan money to use on other trinkets... . :D
