Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) A dead miss

I got an aluminum b&m transmission pan for my truck. It is made for the 518/727. It does not seem to be much deeper than the stock pan. It came with two filter lowering blocks, but I don't think I need to use either one since the pan is only about 1/2 deeper. Anyone have experience with this? Also would you leave out the magnet? JC

I used the shorter spacer, and left the magnet out. I have had no problems with it at all.

The last time I serviced the transmission on my '92, there was a fair amount of metallic "paste" on the magnet. After seeing that, I'm not sure I'd want to run without the magnet.

Is the problem one of getting the magnet to stay in one place in an aluminum (ie, non-magnetic) pan?

Just curious,

Mike

Well in my quest to save some money, I have wasted $130. The B&M pan will not fit my transmission. I tried grinding down one of the ridges inside the pan for clearance but the bolt holes will still not line up. So I'll just have to reinstall the factory pan and chalk up another lesson learned. JC

I see you have a 2001, I also have a 2001 and it fit perfect...

I don't know anything about trannys, but my pan would not mount up flush. It liked about a 1/8th inch on one side. It looked and felt like it was hitting on the part next to the filter. I ground down the inside ridge and it fits flush but the bolts holes will not line up. Some of them are just a hair off and I don't want to drill out the holes. JC

I ordered a B&M and filled it with quarts of water while it was on the bench; result was it was basically the same capacity as the stocker. I really liked the construction of the B&M but it's not "deep" for our trucks. I even called B&M at the time to inquire about it, they just confirmed what I discovered on my workbench.

Bottom line is I paid the $ for the mag and got a genuine deep pan. I know it hurts but that's the way to go IMO.

I can't send it back because I ground 1/8th inch off one of the inside ridges. When I ordered it from TruckPerformance.com they had two choices 1. 518, 2. 727. I got the one for the 727 because it said it fit both the 518 and 727. JC

I have two other vehicles with A-727 transmissions. When I did the filter change on the 2001 Ram, I swear the pan flange is the same as the older A-727. Heck, the guts of the Ram trans looked just like the Roadrunner, except for the electronic governer part.

Anyway, I have a "deep" pan on my 78 Power Wagon, and it is deep for those years. The Roadrunner is stock, with the shallow pan (about 1 inch deep, max). The Ram 47RE stock pan is deeper in some spots than the "deep" pan I have for the Power Wagon. I would imagine the deep pan you got is deep for earlier transmissions, but not deep for the newer ones.

Whether or not the B+M pan has any extra oil capacity depends partially on the year of the truck you are installing it on. I have been under the impression that it does not hold any additional oil for the newer 98+ or was it 99+ transmissions.

I can vouch for that statement. I had both of them out and the B&M only held like a half quart more than my stocker did.
