3208T CAT, any good????

a Chirp?

nice but unimpressive

550 ft-lbs at 2000 rpm. The new dodge will have that at 1400. Horse power means nothing only that it will run very high rpm. And to boot it is still 2 main bearings short of being a real engine.

Just my 2 pennies

Very interesting, they're sticking with cast iron block and heads, using an electronically variable turbo, an available 5 speed auto with built in engine braking and an external cartridge filter. What I think I like most is the new engine's ability to improve one's linguistic performance ;) ... . "The new diesel also has reduced noise levels and has improved speech intelligibility while driving by more than 20 percent. " That alone ought to help it go over big here in Texas :D

Look for the 6. 0L/5speed-auto powertrain option in the 2003 Excursion and F-350. Would that be the Excursion that is being canned??

yeah, the excursion will end after or during 2004. my dad and i will test drive another LE ford when they come out with the new engine and transmission. if he likes the motor, i'd bet that he'll buy one!

just curious if they are going to keep the same zf6 trans for the manual version. with all this hype on the 5 spd auto box, they seem to be doing the same as gm, pushing the automatics for diesels. i personally don't like that idea, but if it works,...

i have a slush box in my tahoe. i love the transmission. the 4l80e is super smooth shifting, but i want a "sporty" manual trans. in a diesel for slightly better fuel economy, and to have fun lugging the motor at low rev's @ WOT:D:D

Engine Braking

The artical states the use of "engine braking". Does this mean that the new 6. 0L will have a true engine break? That would be very nice to see ... but I didn't think that Jake would make a brake for anything less than 10L engines.

I think that Jacobs is underesting the market of these things for the under 10L market ... they'd probably sell like hot-cakes to the Dodge/Ford/Chevy crowd. :D I'd be there with cash in hand for one.

the engine braking thing is probably identical in function to gm's grade braking on the allison/duramax combos... .

... but if the new G2 'strokes have the exhaust backpressure regulating valve like the G1's do, maybe ford got smart and programmed the computer to use that like an exhaust brake in conjunction with the grade braking type feature. . that would be cool if they did that. .
