Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Need a Cummins part

I just finished my install of B1b (from Kurt), DD3's and 4" exhaust now EGT's are way high! Does this sound like a boost leak somewhere? With the comp box OFF I can get 1000+ puttin' around the country side. With the box on 1x5, I can peg the guage if I want to! Little to no boost until about 18-1900 RPM, and by the time it reaches 20 PSI I'm going tooo fast and EGT's are WAY HIGH (going too fast to look at guage) :( Any ideas guys??

What is your boost with the box off,box on level 5. When i had my B1 and dd3s i could get 38psi with no box in OD. and 48psi on level 5. Id be checkingfor boost leaks,my large housing B1 spooled at 1600,it was like a light switch it was turned on at 1600.

I don't think the boost guage read past 30 PSI at any point! At 20 PSI it throws you back in the seat so far you need binoculars to see the boost guage:D

I just found my problem! I stopped by the Dodge dealer on the way home from work and picked up an intake gasket just to ease my mind. I put in on, still no fix! Then I checked the intercooler band clamp off of the turbo--completely sealed  So I started looking at the turbo and THERE IT WAS! The compressor housing has either a flaw in the casting, or when it was cast and they ground the outside diameter of the housing they "BROKE THROUGH" the housing. This left about 3 or 4 pin holes in the top of the compressor housing:eek: Anyone ever see this???? Freak thing I'm sure, but an easy fix anyway!

Skip Kurt, go straight to Ken in Phoenix. He's who really builds the turbos and is easier to deal with IMHO. Ken will have you a new or fixed turbo ASAP.

Get ahold of him now so you can get it straightened out fast.

He's the guy that builds them for Kurt?

Always has... ... he doesn't build them for Kurt, Kurt is just a dealer for Ken..... so is Piers... now, that's were my Big Brother came from.

Jim

Floor it Diesel Performance is also a dealer for Ken. (TDR Member Floor It)

I get my B's through John "Floor It" Isaacs.

Merrick

Good you called him cause I forgot to ask him about it this afternoon when we were talking, don't talk to Ken to long though, he's got this HighPerformance thing stuck in his head and already has me thinking more than I can afford :)

Jim

Well, I got the new compressor on. It definately made a difference. I still don't think it is up to par though. Comp box "off" I can still get 1000* pretty easy and boost around 24 psi , Comp box "on" max boost was 36 psi and started falling. I pegged the pyro real quick:confused: There is no way boost pressure will make it to 30 psi with Comp off! I could make 34 psi with my HY35 and half the EGT's! What the HECK is going on here!

did you install a brass elbow with your comp box [turbo bleed elbow] ??

This is out of the picture without a wastegate..... right! Sounds like Ken got you one dang fast!

I'd start back at the basics and look for leaks, Looks like there's something to learn here for me.

Jim

Good Catch Jim.

BW,, Make sure your exhasue manifold is tight also. Sometimes you wil lhave "silent leaks" where you are loosening nessacary back pressure to drive the turbo.

Maybe you can put a boost gauge where your T-Couple is now, and give us some back pressure readings,, maybe you have funky wheel clearances... .

(Low Back Pressure, Low Boost)

No, there is no elbow on the B1 so that's out! The only other thing could be is the intercooler?? After driving it around today I came to this conclusion: With no boost , like driving down the road at 60mph the pyro is around 700*. If I roll into the throttle just a little and boost starts to come up (3-4 psi) instantly the EGT's start going through the roof. By the time I hit 10 psi it's on 1100*. I was just cruising down the road at 55 mph and came to a little hill in the road and WHAM, looked at the pyro--1350* and climbing, and that's with the Comp off :(

Merrick, I checked the manifold and it's tight! How would be the best way to check back pressure?

Keep 'em coming guys, I'm losing hope here and It's so hard to get ahold of Kurt.

OK, I just had a thought! On the bottom of my B1 there is a flat plate with about 5 or 6 bolts on it, also there is a long bolt sticking out with a nut to lock it in place. I think this bolt was used for a wastegate lockout. Could it be that it is locked down in the wrong position? Between the compressor and the exhaust housing there is a lever that looks like wastegate linkage (that is not hooked up), I think the long bolt underneath has this "locked" in place. Maybe I should play with this????
