Biodiesel

I have an '02 with about 72k miles. I found a station selling B20 for 2. 93/gal, considering the best price for stait #2 is 3. 03/gal. I am thinking about trying some. so my question is will I have any ill effects, could using this fuel void my warranty

Regarding warranty -- Any fuel (even conventional #2 diesel) that causes damage to your vehicle is not covered under your materials and workmanship warranty. In other words, damage cause by fuel, any fuel is not covered. But running anything as fuel cannot void your warranty if the damage / defect is not caused by the fuel.

Regarding things to look out for:

The only ill-effects on your 2002 would possibly be fuel filter clogging or buildup after your first couple tank fulls as the cleaning properties of the biodiesel loosen up petrolium deposits built up in your fuel system.

I've read where it's been suggested that people buy a couple fuel filters to carry around for security and drive the truck on B20 with the existing filter for a few tank fulls then change the filter. Then repeat the proceedure after a few more tank fulls of B20. It's possible that you won't have any buildup at all in the filter.

B20 is still 80% #2 petro diesel and it shouldn't be that big of a cleaning shock to your truck's fuel system. The worry is more for trucks with 150k #2 diesel miles and then go with B100 and shock the system. You're not in this situation so get a couple filters and have them handy just in case and enjoy... .

Hi Bob

I bought mine from Jim Robertson of Biofuels America, Inc.

#ad

Jim will deliver to South Florida and is a major enthusiast. Tell him I sent you.

He's a good guy, not a zealot and will rap with you about bio as long as you want to.

Hi Bob,

I tried to PM you but your mailbox is full.

I spoke with Jim Robertson this AM and he said that he will deliver to most of Florida including the Orlando area. He tries to combine deliveries together so as to not charge very much for delivery. If he has enough drums to deliver, the delivery is free. He has an order to go up to the Orlando area next week he said. Right now he said the market for B95 is at $2. 95 per gallon. He will sell you any blend you want, however, including B20 and B5 and the price is the same. I just buy the B95 and then blend it myself.

I hope this helps!

what about anti gel?/ winter

Seeing as we are getting closer to cold weather how much ANTI GEL are we going to add to this mixture, if it clouds 10* or so warmer than # 2? I treat 10 to 12 oz on 35 Gal of #2. October is close and Freezing temps.

Cardwell has some also. Just something to consider.

I ran b20 in my 02' from 20000 to when I traded it @ 29000. It ran quieter with faster response and 1-2 mpg better. Just do it but remember you will clean your tank and lines with the bio so you should change your filter before changing then after a couple thousand miles on the b20. My understanding is you are treating the #2 when you add anti-gelling treatment as it has no effect on the vegetable based fuel. http://www.dalsogliooil.com/ is a good source of information in SLC. Give them a call. I bought b20 from them when I was there. They will be able to advise you how to treat your bio fuel in your area.

Thanks JW, I was thinking that I would call, or just stop in and ask all the questions because of the cold weather approching.

Power Services Diesel Fuel Supplement +Cetane Boost does help fight gelling biodiesel up to B20. Apparently the 80% petro in the B20 responds well to the anti-gel formula. The rep I spoke with did say they don't promise anti-gelling much above B20 tho.

Jay, you have found alot on the topic, maybe I misunderstood but my impression was that the PS and others don't actually work on the bio portion of a biofuel blend. The reduced gelling on biofuel is accomplished by antigelling the petrolium portion of the blend and with blends at b20 and below this is enough to combat gelling of the whole blend. This would be why it won't work on high percentages of biofuel.

I was responding to MLee's post about temps. Yes -- You had already said that and I was just repeating it.

You said it better:

"The reduced gelling on biofuel is accomplished by antigelling the petrolium portion of the blend and with blends at b20 and below this is enough to combat gelling of the whole blend. "

Cummins Cowboy, go for it your truck will love ya for it. I started running B20 (soybean oil) and after three months switched to B100. It will clean your fuel system for sure. I normally change my fuel filter every 6k, and I added a change in half that time at 3k once and all was well. I am back to my normal 6k change now.

The truck is quieter, smoother, feels stronger i. e more responsive and best of all I have gained about 1 m. p. g. Another added benefit is that just 1% bio doubles the lubricating properties of diesel so your VP44 will love ya for it.

I filled up my 1993 1st gen with B99 and 190,000 on the clock. Ran the hole tank and filled with B20. Still no problems and the filter was not that bad but I am keeping a close eye on it.

I have never had my truck run so smooth or quiet. Most of the time after the truck gets fully warmed up it would idle sluggish with the POD injectors. The bio has made a big differance on how the truck idles and yes it seams to run much better also.
