Went to my local Dodge today. They had two nearly indentical 2500 Quadcab 4x4 LWB 6-speed. One with the G56 and one with the NV5600.
I have driven several NV5600, so I wanted to drive them both back-to-back so I could decide which I wanted.
First, took out the G56. While the shift action was easier, it has a very different feel. It's hard to describe, but the word "hollow" comes to mind. Definitely felt light. And the slightly lower gearing could be felt.
Taking off in second, flooring it and shifting in third produced an involuntary chirp. I am easy on trannies, and I don't slam/dump clutched, so it surprised me. The G56 can definitely be muscled into gears, if you so desire. I wouldn't, but that's just me.
Then back into a NV5600. I vastly prefer the feel of it. It seems tighter (better, in my mind) that the G. Sure, you can't hurry it through the gears, you have to shift slower and easier. If you try to hurry it up, you will either miss the gear, or crunch it in - especially in 6th. Due to the longer shift time, and slightly longer gearing, even when try for speed, there was no chirp of the tires on the 2-3 shift. Acceleration is still adequate, especially for a 7,000 pounds behemoth.
I'm buying the NV5600. It felt more like my beloved acura (honda) gear boxes - albeit much slower, but hey, it has to handle like 27 times the amount of torque!
More precise, a little notchier than the G56, but a better overall feel in my opinion.
This is just IMHO, I have been driving manuals since I learned how to drive, almost 20 years ago, and I race cars for fun
Now I can tow the track toy in peace.
I'll be picking up my rig 5/21, which is when my 30-day anniversary with the local farm bureau. can't wait. woo-hoo Oo.
