Went to my local Dodge today. They had two nearly indentical 2500 Quadcab 4x4 LWB 6-speed. One with the G56 and one with the NV5600.

I have driven several NV5600, so I wanted to drive them both back-to-back so I could decide which I wanted.

First, took out the G56. While the shift action was easier, it has a very different feel. It's hard to describe, but the word "hollow" comes to mind. Definitely felt light. And the slightly lower gearing could be felt.

Taking off in second, flooring it and shifting in third produced an involuntary chirp. I am easy on trannies, and I don't slam/dump clutched, so it surprised me. The G56 can definitely be muscled into gears, if you so desire. I wouldn't, but that's just me.

Then back into a NV5600. I vastly prefer the feel of it. It seems tighter (better, in my mind) that the G. Sure, you can't hurry it through the gears, you have to shift slower and easier. If you try to hurry it up, you will either miss the gear, or crunch it in - especially in 6th. Due to the longer shift time, and slightly longer gearing, even when try for speed, there was no chirp of the tires on the 2-3 shift. Acceleration is still adequate, especially for a 7,000 pounds behemoth.

I'm buying the NV5600. It felt more like my beloved acura (honda) gear boxes - albeit much slower, but hey, it has to handle like 27 times the amount of torque! More precise, a little notchier than the G56, but a better overall feel in my opinion.

This is just IMHO, I have been driving manuals since I learned how to drive, almost 20 years ago, and I race cars for fun :D Now I can tow the track toy in peace.

I'll be picking up my rig 5/21, which is when my 30-day anniversary with the local farm bureau. can't wait. woo-hoo Oo.

I ordered my 05 in January and thought I would be getting the G56, but was actually relieved to have gotten the NV5600. . Now I'm even more pleased.

hell, ya'll can start a war if you want. I'll break out the popcorn and a 6-pack so I can enjoy the show.

There's been so much posting about the G56 that I thought some might want my still unbiased opinion about it. I have never owned a dodge truck, and the 05 will be my first. I just shared my impressions as someone with a fair bit of experience with *car* manual transmissions. The G56 feels more like a car transmission due to its lighter feel, but the NV5600 feels more precise to me, despite being a heavier "truck-like" transmission.

I have owned a 87 Ford Diesel 4-speed, and a chevy S10 5-speed. The NV feels more like the ford transmission, and the G more like the S10 transmission.

Take your pick. YMMV, JIMHO, etc.

Well my truck is scheduled to show up at the dealership on the 20th of this month.

Not sure which one I'm getting, just glad that I'll have a 7/70k warranty.

I test drove 2 with the nv5600 and they seemed great. Wouldn't mind the extra gearing with the g56. Guess I'll just have to wait for another week.....

Back on subject, I also had the chance to drive a 5600 and G56 back to back. I preferred the shifting of the G56. The clutch engagement was very smooth and the spacing between gears is nice. I do not care for the . 79 overdrive ratio though. This would foce me to install 33" tires to bring the rpm's down. (Good excuse for the wife)

I let a friend drive the G56 I had for 4 days and he also liked the new transmission. He owns a 5600. I also had a 5600 in my 2000 3500.

Looks like I get to order an 06 since dealers here do not want to sell their 6 speeds under invoice.
