School bus to motorhome trouble

Petite Woman-friendly Gooseneck hitch

I recently purchased a backup camera setup off of ebay with the 7" color LCD monitor. The camera is a Sharp and the monitor a "Nitro". There are a lot of these setups both color and b/w. One backup camera dealer said they are "junk. " Maybe, but he was selling Voyager. Has anyone used one of these setups and how did you like/dislike it? I haven't installed it yet as I am waiting on a cable adapter to preserve the pre-wire in my truck camper.

Thanks

SRehberg:

Thanks for posting the topic. I have been looking into a back up camera as well for my truck. I found that there are a few companies that can convert the stock NAV (REC) on the newer trucks to accept two video inputs. However, the cost is $495 and I would have to pull it out, ship it to the company and then reinstall it. There are LCD monitors that are cheaper in price and probably better picture quality.

How much was the Nitro monitor? Haven't heard of that one yet. I would be interested in learning where you plan to install it. Same with the camera.

I have been looking at the Rostra brand (Rostra Precision Controls, Inc. - Automotive/Consumer Products - RearSight Back Up Camera Systems (Kit#250-8010) as well as buying the components and installing it myself. I'm debating on where to install the monitor and camera. I don't care for the peephole type of camera as the view is too distorted for me.

Thanks,

Brad

Brad,

I bought the setup off of ebay, as I think the seller has them on there all the time. The LCD monitor has a two year warranty supposedly and an address/ph. for service. For the color camera, cables, monitor and delivery it showed up on my doorstep for $216 from Los Angeles. The camera has "mirror" image capability as well as infrared for nighttime and I think it was 120* view. Looks decent enough to me but I haven't tried it yet. I didn't want to modify the cables in the prewire of the Lance camper so I ordered some cables to adapt them over incase I ever want to go strictly the Lance setup (Voyager).

We tow a utility trailer behind the camper which I cannot see behind us when going straight down the road. I guess I could rely on a passing motorist frantically waving or wait until I see smoke and sparks shooting off the rims! :) Seriously I hope it works well as I feel blind to what is going on back there.

Mounting the monitor is going to be a good one. If I had an automatic I would most likely have put it in over the center trans hump up aways. Due to the 5 spd and 4X lever and aBS box, it's getting a little crowded so I'm looking at the 'A' pillar on the driver's side. Right smack down on the dash as low as possible, maybe even so it could flip down. It's designed to even go on the backs of front seats so there are possibilities. I'm open to suggestions but the monitor isn't all that large.

Hope this helps, and congratulations on the new truck!

Any wireless systems out there? I have a 36' toyhauler and a 14' utility. any systems out there that are wireless so I can monitor what is going on?

I have a 36' 5th wheel toyhauler and tow a 14' utility trailer. is there a reasonable priced Wireless Monitor/camera to mount on the rear of the trailer?... if so how would it be powered?

Talk about timing. I saw a wireless unit at Sam's Club Sunday. It is priced at $90. I was thinking about getting one, but could not find the range on it. I would like to mount one on my 16' enclosed trailer. The camera was in a mount that bolted to the top of the tag bracket. It showed the monitor in several mounting places and used to accept feeds from other sources. They showed it on the back of the sun visor which interested me.

I bought the Wally world unit for less than $100. and it works pretty well. I have it on the back of a 31' Ho-Lo and the picture is OK. I get some interferance from businesses that have security cameras in their stores, but over all it been good.
