The other day I got bored and decied to stright pipe the truck. After doing so I noticed it now backfires. It only happens when I'm at WOT and when it shifts. I'm not sure if it's coinsidence, or my truck is just having issues. I did a search and it looks like a fuel filter change is the recommended solution. Anyone else with this problem?

oh ya, the straight pipe sounds pretty good!

Are you sure the sound you are hearing isn't just the turbo unloading fast. When I straight piped my '97 and then my '99, I was able to hear a very loud air rush sound between shifts. It is the turbo slowing down fast when you take the load off the engine. It doesn't hurt anything.

Since I removed my silencer ring I haven't herd the turbo bark you are referring to.

This is deffanitly out the exhaust pipe, and it is a pop noise. not real load, but noticable. Tomarrow I'm going to pull the box off to see what that does.

Turbo bark is no joke you can snap the main shaft and watch 1K flush down the toilet. You should look into a pop off if your turbo is barking that much.

Ive understood that a higher fueling box can accelerate this problem My truck has done this once, its a misfire not back fire. It almost sounds like a black cat firecracker on steroids out the exh. pipe. I believe its atributed to the lift pump pressure getting sucked down to zero causing a fuel supply issue to the injectors causing a missfire and thus making the loud POP noise. The pop noise in other trucks ive heard of is rare (they can suck down the pressure to 0 and may not do it) but I believe that the pilot injetion plays a role in this noise as well (pilot injection shuts off at certain rpms). I could be wrong though too?

Mattymac,

The sounds like it could be it!! Miss fire is probably a better way to describe it. Mines not real loud, but you can hear it. I bought a couple fuel filters and we'll see if that helps. I can't beleive the price of fuel filters at the dealer!! $30 a piece!! OUCH! They were the only place open, so I guess I'm going to have to shop around next time!

well I put in the new fuel filter and problem solved!!! That filter was NASTY!!!!! I might have got bad fuel. That was an easy fix!

That makes sense as to what mattymac was saying. With a plugged filter it wasn't getting enough fuel and probably causing a missfire rather than a backfire! Thanks for the help!
