The backup lights on these Dodge trucks stink. On a rainy night you can't see hardly at all. Has anyone come up with a unique way of mounting auxilary backup lights that don't make a nice sporty looking truck look like a work truck? Some that really work?

Thanks,
Blake

Thanks, I did not realize there were previous discussions on this. I guess tractor lighting is probably the best way to go. Aircraft landing lights would give tons of light and deter the tailgaters, though they may have to pull off to let their eyes adjust.

I added a set of Hella Driving lights to my rear bumper. The factory lights are bad enough, i have dark window tint and you cant see ANYTHING without auxiliary lights.

Blakers - When I mention that the back-up lights could assist with the taigaters, I get the I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER beat out of me on here. I agree with you about all their advantages and have fabricated my own. Now I'm fabricating new and improved mounting brackets. Just be careful to be "politically correct" about what you intend to use them for.

There are a number of us that have converted the back up lights to amber turn signals by rewiring them and replacing the bulb. Then installing back up lights under the bumper.

Warning - I did a lot of research on back-up lights. Teh solution I found may not be the best, but I do have twin 110,000 candlepower aircraft lights, that are mounted in a waterproof case! Yes they are the tractor lights! But just as I mentioned in the thread, these were the only light I saw that actually keeps water out. Look carefully at any light you choose and see how water resistent it is to be mounting backwards at teh rear of your rig. All the water tire spray will eventualkly find it's way into the cracks and crannies of most lights.

I bought some small rectangular backup lights at Camping World, around $30, but don't have them on yet. They came with cheezy brackets and zip ties to mount them to the trailer hitch, my plan is to weld some mounts to the hitch so they are enclosed on all sides. I have a habbit of tearing things off that are mounted back there, as well as finding the tounge of my trailer by backing into it.

I didn't want something "hanging" either (no pun intended), so I used these lil' backups. . they came with 50 watt halogen, and I changed them out with 85's... plus thanks to Evan Beck, I'm wiring them to turn on only when it's in reverse, AND the headlights are on worked for me... . Oh! plus I added 50 watt halogen's in the stock BU's...

Thanks guys. I know they make nice rubber light fixtures for round tractor lights which will also work with the small 100W landing lights - the sealed beam bulb just snaps into the housing and, if you grease up the steel mountings, there is nothing to rust and the rubber absorbs shock and vibration. I think rectangular looks better, but maybe that's not so important. I think I already have everything I need. ... Blake

Look at Cahill's picture. My lamps are BONDED with RTV to top of the trailer hitch frame, scuff them with some 36 grit apply adhesive, point them where you want them, let it cure. Be sure to get a relay of some kind in the circuit. The factory fuse will not carry the load long and the switch in the transmission presents significant voltage drop.
