I am looking to buy a backup light kit in the near future. Does anyone know of any kits that have very bright rectangular lights? Any ideas? Thanks.

I just mounted a set of rectangular driving lights under the bumper and wired them to come on with my b/u lights. Used a relay and added a switch to be able to turn them on while hooking up the trailer.

White Night makes a kit that mounts to your trailer hitch so that you don't have to drill into your bumper. Comes with a relay to turn them on when your reverse lights go on, but I bypassed that and wired it to a switch instead. This way I can turn them on at will. Geno's Garage has them. Just search "white night" from their hompage.

I tried the White Knight lights and sent them right back. They essentially make the reciever non-fuctional. You can put a hitch in it but it is not easy to take in and out. (I always take mine out when I don't need it so I won't kick it) It makes the safety chain loops completely non-functional. If you never use your reciever, it will work great. It wasn't for me, so I'm looking at cutting a hole in the bumper and putting in some fog lights.

KC has a set that I put on my last 2 trucks that are made specifically for back up. They mount pretty easily with the supplied brackets. They are very bright too. The only thing I don't like about them are that the reflectors inside tend to rot after a few years. They have a 27 year warranty though, so I always get them replaced for free.

I had the White Knight on my 99 and did not like it either.

I gutted the White Knight to install lights in the rear bumper on my 99 and I did the same on my 04... . 3 days after I bought it. :-laf

There is a switch mounted right below the tailgate that has the same function as the White Knight.

I gladly grant you that it is not easy to take the drawbar in and out with the White Night on, but I leave mine in to use as a step up into the bed, so it doesn't bother me as much as it might someone else. The safety chain loops are useable, you just have to look underneath to get at them. The White Night isn't perfect by any means, but for me it's a fair compromise. I can completely understand why someone wouldn't like them, it's all a matter of individual tolerance.

hey gus and bsappington,
great job on the lights--I have been planning to just that for awhile... I don't think it is overkill because I have a camper shell; I already have a 4 5/8" holesaw and the par-36/#4415 sealed beam bulbs and the rubber grommets. Is that what you used?? My only problem now is that I am pretty sure I am going to get a Reunel bumper, which means I will have them cut the holes, after I make sure that I know the right size. When I tried fitting the bulbs in a 4 1/2" hole in the grommet, it was definitely too tight. Thanks for the feedback.

bsappington,

I feel a tad bit better now after seeing the pic' of your truck. The one thing I do not like about my mbrp twice pipes are the fact that the angle of the tail pipes are different on both sides.

we did it with a 4. 5" saw. verry tight fit.

Gus, thanks, that's what I thought, which is why I am going with the 4 5/8", to leave a little more room for fitting, bounce and play. Still wondering if those are par36/#4415's or what--they are fantastically bright! Thanks again .

The bulbs are 4411 from Napa. There where several different styles of these lights such as clear spot lights and what have you. I chose the 4411 because they are flood light and I was going for the most coverage of light I could get as apposed to pin point brightness. Both trucks have 4411s.

As for my exhaust tips, yeah we adjusted them about 10 time to get them straight. Then when we tighten the passenger side clamp it moved slightly. #@$%!

Its been driving me nuts ever since. Just not enough for me to crawl under the truck in the rain to fix it.

Hey Gus,

Nice job with the lights. Are you worried about the bumper prematurely rusting out. If so, what's the fix?

My 99 I did about a year ago and my buddy has an 03 that has a painted rear bumper. No sign of rust. We did has some concerns about rust but I was just thinking you could silicone the grommet in and it should be O. K.

Piaa makes a nice set, they are metal not plastic like the kc's. kit comes with the relay, wire and switch. I had the white knight also and sent it back.

I actually greased around the hole once I cut it. It's been about 2 years since they were cut out, no sign of rust.

Matt- Do you have a pic of your reverse lights mounted. I really like the beam pattern of the Hella "AS 115 FF" that you suggested.

I need more light for plowing snow, the problem is I often back over snow piles. I am concerned that they will get broken by snow and ice chunks If I mount them low.

The fellas that have put them in the bumper came up with a better way IMO, I think that is a great way to go especially for the possibility of backing into snow banks.

Where mine are I have to be careful backing into a parking spot that has a bank/berm behind me. If I forget and it has frozen they will be toast at which time I will drill the bumper and put a set of clear fog lamps in there.
