Well here is what i have.

Its a 1997 3500 5 speed us gear overdrive and its a 4wdrive. 200,000

the truck is currently down in my shop awaiting parts for another issue. but let me start at the begining.

for about the last year i have noticed after long drives that when i roll down a window or stop there is a horible smell outside like burnt grease, like something is getting hot. After long drives i have put my hand on the rearend and its warm but nothing notible. .

Then last week i was towing a car from seatle to portland and my transmission stuck in 5th. i was on the freeway and managed to get home.

. so i pulled the transfercase , overdrive and the transmission. first i drained all the fluids. The transfer case fluid looked great. The overdrive unit on the otherhand smelt very burnt. i had also noted that it was very hotwhen i got back from seatle. It doesnt surprise me i was stuck in 5th afterall.

then i drained the transmission it looked fine "i had changed the mainshaft in it a few years back. .

so the plan rightnow is to fix the transmission , parts will be here monday, put everthing back together with new fluids . And then see if the smell is gone, if not i am going to talk to US gear about rebuilding the overdrive... i am not sure what else could be causing the smell.

i had done a complete front end rebuild with new wheel bearings etc a year ago but nothing up front seams hot and it drives well... .

ant ideas? thanks

I havent checked them yet but thats not a bad idea. that side of the engine is very dry underneath but it wouldnt take much... ... ... the other side of the engine has always seaped a little from ?????? no idea where not even enough to leave drips on the ground but the engine is covered in oil / disel ??

i was reading posts about my overdrive unit and stumbled on one stating you are only supose to have 1 qrt of oil in the unit. i would say mine had closer to two quarts... so i will talk to us gear and see what they have to say about that. plus i will be putting in amsoil. never tried it before but i have some coming with my transmission parts from standard transmission.
