I posted this in the 911 but really need any help i can get, thanks

Last night tach went dead and check engine light came on. Truck wouldn't start today. Read on here that most likely crank position sensor. Bought one today and installed tonight. Old sensor has face wore off. You can see the metal inside. It is wore aprox. 1/16 inch deep and 3/8 inch wide. Put in the new sensor and truck started right up. Ran for awhile, shut off and restarted a few times and took for a drive. Finally check engine light went out. Can hear an odd clicking noise, like something is rubbing. Took down the street and then tack goes dead again and check engine light came on again. Parked in garage. What can be causing the sensor to be getting eaten up. How can the tone ring or whatever is in there be rubbing the sensor? 141k miles on truck. Oil pressure is great, run perfect after installin new sensor for about 15 minutes of running less than a mile of driving. Only option i can see is shimming the sensor out about 1/16 inch. Any help would be great, thanks

If the sensor is on the front of the engine, there is a tone wheel that is bolted to the cam shaft i belive,if the bolts losen up,and cut the sensor,if the wheel comes off it will do great damage to the engine.

Need to pull pan

I talked to my brother and a guy that he works with at a freightliner shop. He said that there is a split ring tone gear bolted to the crank, and that could be loose. He has only seen one come loose and it tore things up bad. So... how hard is to get the oil pan off? Guess it could be worse, it is still in one piece. Thanks

damn that sucks i just got this code tonight for hte first time and now i'm worried i also got a 0602ecm com error what the hell could that be from

Found problem

I have the pan off and waiting to get a pan gasket and new sensor. I was able to pull the pan without pulling the oil pick-up. I had the truck about two feet up on the hoist and used a cherry picker to raise the motor as far as it would go. One of the three screws that hold the larger section of the tone ring was in the pan, one was loose and one was still fairly tight. Guess I got lucky. Everything inside looks like new. Also going to try to get a new waste gate acuater as I checked that out and the diaphram is blown out. Thanks for the help

I would pull all the screws, one at a time and spray it and the hole with Brake Kleen or equivalent and use Loctite 242 (blue stuff) on them to be sure this doesn't happen again. Glad it worked for you.

loc-tite

I was thinking using red loc-tite, any reason to use blue, i know i won't need to pull these screws out again.

I guess I can see no reason not to use red. Likelyhood of ever needing to remove them would very small. Anytime I Locktite small fasteners like that I use blue because with red it's nearly impossible to remove them without using heat and being lucky.

Kim

What you have to look at in Loc-tite is the melting point of it with heat, oil heat may make it become soft, for a much work as it is to pull pan i would check this out,all loc-tite will become licquid with heat. . ok

Loctite 262 retains about 25% of it's strenght at 300*F and you need to heat to about 450*F to remove. 262 isn't the best product for small fasteners like this (not sure which is), but the one most used and the one I am most familiar with.

all done

Got it back together tonight. Loc-tite blue on the screws and torqued to 18 in-lbs. Runs fine and no problems. Total cost, $27 each for two sensors, $19 for a pan gasket, and 4 hours time, not to bad i guess. Thanks everyone, Tony

Service manual calls for 71 inch pounds and Loctite 242. Where did you get 18? (or was that a typo, I hope) When I did my inlaws, I called Cummins and they told me 51 inch pounds. I didn't have the service manual yet then.

Kim

you are right

You had me scared for a second. I did torque the screws to 71 in-lbs, and the pan to 18 ft-lbs. I used 242, and all is good so far, didn't drive it today though. Guess I slipped up on my typing last night. Been working 60-70 hours at work, trying to get stuff done around the house, plus fixing the truck. thanks,

Tony :D
