Last night tach went dead and check engine light came on. Truck wouldn't start today. Read on here that most likely crank position sensor. Bought one today and installed tonight. Old sensor has face wore off. You can see the metal inside. It is wore aprox. 1/16 inch deep and 3/8 inch wide. Put in the new sensor and truck started right up. Ran for awhile, shut off and restarted a few times and took for a drive. Finally check engine light went out. Can hear an odd clicking noise, like something is rubbing. Took down the street and then tack goes dead again and check engine light came on again. Parked in garage. What can be causing the sensor to be getting eaten up. How can the tone ring or whatever is in there be rubbing the sensor? 141k miles on truck. Oil pressure is great, run perfect after installin new sensor for about 15 minutes of running less than a mile of driving. Only option i can see is shimming the sensor out about 1/16 inch. Any help would be great, thanks

need to pull pan

I found out i most likely have a loose tone gear on the crank. So, anyone have any idea how to get the pan off, and if i can get to the tone gear? Thanks

hey man i just got this code tonight for the first time with that new xcellerator and the banks six gun speedloader on level six it gave me the code i just cleared it and went on it seems fine

let me know how your research goes

TBrown - I'm pretty sure the only way to get the pan off is to raise motor due to crossmember/front differential. I wonder if the rings is fastened with set screws that can be accessed via the old mechanical LP plunger arm hole - covered by the electric LP mounting plate or maybe the hole where the sensor is located - it's a far shot but worth looking into - just a guess? Do let us know what you find out?

going good

I have the pan off and waiting to get a pan gasket and new sensor. I was able to pull the pan without pulling the oil pick-up. I had the truck about two feet up on the hoist and used a cherry picker to raise the motor as far as it would go. One of the three screws that hold the larger section of the tone ring was in the pan, one was loose and one was still fairly tight. Guess I got lucky. Everything inside looks like new. Also going to try to get a new waste gate acuater as I checked that out and the diaphram is blown out. Thanks for the help
