2006 dodge 2500 Atlanta Ga stranded (fuel bypass)

Fueling problem

Hi all,

2004.5 5.9l Manual, 188k miles.

Quick run down. Last week we had torrential rain and flooding in the are, extreme Eastern OH, Western PA. I got fuel the next morning on my way to the Pittsburgh area after the crazy storm. ran through 1/2 a tank, then engine starts white smoking and water in fuel light came on. Limped it 1/2 mile home. Drained the separator at the bottom of the fuel filter and changed fuel filter. After re-priming it was still filled with water. Did a big dose of Power Source, ran several quarts of Sea Foam through by pouring right into the filter canister. Let it sit 18 hours, started it up this morning, water in fuel light back on after 1 min or so. Shut it down, drained the separator again, almost a 50/50 blend of water and fuel.....

So, I am not in position right now with available tools and a good place to work to be able to drain the tank , drop it, clean it and the fuel lines. In the middle of a relocation.

Looking for a good, reputable diesel shop or even a trustworthy dealership in the Boardman, OH area. Probably going to have it towed to a shop, don't want to trash injectors.

Any help with this would be appreciated

You shouldnt have to drop the tank if you can siphon out the ****ty fuel and fill back up with good fuel. Wamart should have a siphon tube and 5gal jugs to put old fuel in. I had an employee once fill up a pre emissions duramax with gasoline and drive it 10 miles. We siphoned it all out changed filters filled it back up and were good to go. I did add 2stroke oil to it for awhile after that to help lube back up any gaskets or whatnot that the gas may have dried out.

If your totally stranded this probably will not help. Not familiar with your truck but it seems everything has a pump in the tank. Disconnect fuel line somewhere get the pump to run and into a vessel of some sort ?

Jep that would be my way to go also.
Dont be fooled by the WIF Light, a had it once coming on. Drained properly, drove on, WIF stayed on. Drained again - just fuel came out, no Water.
After half an hour driving WIF went off, never came back.

Gentleman,

Thanks for the replies.

Guy I bought this truck from did an upgrade at some point, lift pump in the tank. Fuel lines are rigid metal, run along the side of the frame. Was looking to see if there was an easy disconnect at the tank, they are up on top where I can't get to them.

I have messed with Sea Foam and MMO in the fuel filter housing, using it as a primer every time I drained the separator. Continuing to get loads of wter mixed in with the fuel.

I guess my fear with just siphoning out the tank and putting in fresh fuel and some conditioner is that if I did damage the injectors, don't want to do any more damage. Thoughts?

Talked to my insurance company, they will cover my tow to a shop. They will not cover the cost of cleaning out a tank and lines, but they would pay for any injector issues or anything else that could come from water in fuel.

So it could end up costing me $500 to drop the tank and have lines cleaned, insurance would cover diagnostics and major damage associated with the bad fuel.

To tow or not to tow, that is the question....

Open the drain at the filter bowl, switch on the fuel pump and let it empty your tank, then all water is gone.
To let the pump run just jumper the relay.

Perhaps you have to lift the front of the truck a little to make the tank sits perfectly level so that the pumps sucks everything out of the tank.

I will give it a try, get out the water and let you all know how it turns out.

I appreciate the help and suggestions, it's why I am a TDR member and subscriber

Drop the tank, only good way to clean it all out. If there is water in there there is likely other garbage that needs removed. Don't try to push it thru the lines or there will be rust in then and possibly other contamination, you will likely have to back flush from the filter to the tank connections to make sure those lines are clean also. Might as well pull the rail and lines there to and flush them also and do it quickly before any chance of rust starts.

That much contamination SOP is replace everything for the CP-3 to the injectors and remove\flush the rest. If you get the everything flushed and cleaned you MIGHT salvage the injectors and CP-3 but they will be suspect.

Did you find a shop? There is a Cummins repair shop in Hubbard. Probably 20 miles from Boardman. I can get the info if you still need.

You need a good diesel shop with one of these.

Let me explain.
I’m a long time Diesel Mechanic- my Shop has one of these, and since I’m with a Government Fleet, we run wild experimental bio diesel concoctions. We’re always faced with contamination.
I’ve made up a few adapters for different trucks, and what I’ll do is tap in just before the primary fuel filter and either pull out the fuel with that machine and put fresh in, and recirculate or recirculate the existing fuel to “polish” out the water and contaminants. The filter will usually be a 2 micron with water wicking media in a coalescing housing that really separates the contaminates. This usually takes a few hours, and you’ll wind up with a perfect fuel system. You wouldn’t believe what we drain off the bowl of that polisher filter.

I would do as others have said and drop/clean the tank.

I would also stop putting any seafoam in the truck, especially with water in the tank. I like the stuff for gassers, but it can be very bad for diesels and I wouldn’t ever add it to a diesel tank. Seafoam contains alcohol, which will thin the water out and make it very difficult to separate and then it gets to the injectors and does it’s damage.

Just use it the diesel in the tank to prime the motor, if it won’t fire on that there are other issues.
